To amp you up for the season 7 premiere of Dexter tonight, I am providing you with these two spectacular recreations of the opening theme song, “Morning Routine.” Music can make or break a television series. An original theme song can bring viewers to a deeper emotional level with every viewing if done well. Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Office, and Friends are all a part of this community. See what these two fans have done to pay their respects to the original music created by Rolfe Kent.
Dexter has a very effective opening sequence because every time I make breakfast I think of the song and it won’t leave my head. The imagery is great and the light yet somewhat mysterious tone of the music sets up Dexter perfectly.
Playing around with the opening sequence, YouTube user Ty Mattson recreated the opening sequence with a Saul Bass interpretation. Creating some of the most iconic title sequences which include The Man with the Golden Arm, Vertigo, Psycho (1960), and North by Northwest, Saul Bass is what many artists aspire to when creating opening sequences.
Straying away from the morning routine, this Dexter opening sequence would make Walt Jr. run away in fear. Utilizing many elements of the first season, Mattson does a great job at relaying the visual elements of the show rather than Dexter’s breakfast ritual.
Heading in a different direction, upright bass artist Adam Ben Ezra decided to pay tribute to Rolfe Kent by creating a one man show out of the opening theme music. He not only performs Rolfe Kent’s “Morning Routine” incredibly well, but he also fuses Daniel Licht’s closing music, “Blood Theme,” flawlessly. With multiple musical instruments at his disposal, Ben Ezra does justice to these songs.
The seventh season of Dexter premieres tonight at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime and stars Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar, Lauren Velez, C. S. Lee, David Zayas, and Desmond Harrington.
