Instagram announced this past week that they will begin incorporating advertisements into their app very soon. Although the company claims to believe that the integration of ads will not interrupt the user experience, this may not bode well with some of the apps over 150 million users. Everyone’s favorite social media of late, Instagram, has had its fair share of controversies. A while back, the company sparked an outrage, causing many of its users to drop the service due to a rather vague update to their privacy policy. Clarifying that users photos would not be sold to third party or advertisers, Instagrammers dodged a very inconvenient bullet. Now, with the announcement of ad placement, the mobile app developers may find another backlash in its user base.

Instagram’s reasoning to this change: “building Instagram into a sustainable business.” These advertisements will only pertain to those in the United States for now, and it was not discussed when other countries will experience this change. Encouraging company growth, Instagram plans to take this new initiative in baby steps:

 “Seeing photos and videos from brands you don’t follow will be new, so we’ll start slow. We’ll focus on delivering a small number of beautiful, high-quality photos and videos from a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community.”

Twitter has done a pretty decent job at making their ads fluid in their design, but they’re layout doesn’t consist of a visual ad. Mingling ads into Instagram could be as disruptive as driving through the country, enjoying the beauty of the moment, and then seeing a billboard. If you dislike Facebook ads, it could feel just as similar.

When will users begin to see ads as they are browsing through their feed is unclear, but the company hopes that when their new business model launches that it will feel as unobtrusive as possible:

“Our aim is to make any advertisements you see feel as natural to Instagram as the photos and videos many of you already enjoy from your favorite brands. After all, our team doesn’t just build Instagram, we use it each and every day. We want these ads to be enjoyable and creative in much the same way you see engaging, high-quality ads when you flip through your favorite magazine.”

As always, you own your own photos and videos. The introduction of advertising won’t change this.
