Walt Disney Animation Studios is putting it all out on the table by introducing Frozen as a musical. In the newest trailer, a month before the film’s release, Disney fans will have their first listen to “For the First Time in Forever,” sung by Kristen Bell (Anna) and Idina Menzel (Snow Queen Elsa). Not only do we get to preview one of the newest songs from Frozen, but this trailer also expands on the character of Elsa. Watch the trailer after the jump.
“For the First Time in Forever” is just one of the various original songs created by the husband and wife team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Robert is notable for his achievements in co-creating The Book of Mormon. This song bears many similarities to the feel of Wicked, especially since there were witch sisters in that musical as well. Without context, the song doesn’t do much for the trailer, but Bell and Menzel sound nice together.
The trailer here does a decent job at introducing us to Elsa, the new Queen of Arendelle. She is hardly mentioned in the first full-length trailer, but now we have a a slight grasp at what to expect from her. Still no dialogue from though, we only hear from Anna, Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and Ola the snow man (Josh Gad). The first trailer introduced us to the fun, and now this one is bringing out more of the action and story elements. Check it out:
All of the marketing efforts for Frozen have still not warmed my interest in seeing this film. I feel like there is a lack of character depth and a sense of adventure or wonder that is severely missing which Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph were able to convey. Kristoff feels wooden, Olaf still has no appeal to me, and Anna and Elsa have been given very little to capture my attention. I hope that the marketing team is just holding back something better that they don’t want to spoil for the film. I really want to like Frozen, but what we’ve seen thus far is not up to the Disney standard in my eyes.
Frozen has a lot of potential. A sisterly conflict that involves magic and trust, mystical snow creatures, beautiful animation, and musical numbers. How could this go wrong for Disney? If the House of Mouse can pull something out as fun as Tangled they will hit the hat-trick for sure with their computer animated films of late. There is still a mystery left to be unsolved with Anna’s hair turning white, and I hope that’s the missing ingredient that will pique my interest.
Has “For the First Time in Forever” warmed your heart? Are you prepared for the next Disney musical?
Disney’s Frozen hits theaters Thanksgiving weekend, November 27, 2013 in 2D and 3D.
