Movies on Blu-ray

The Hateful Eight Blu-ray Box Cover ArtThe Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino) Rated R [3h 7min] – In the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, and Channing Tatum

There’s no denying that Quentin Tarantino is a visionary in the cinematic realm. His overall style and class of filmmaking is on another plane of existence. And as entertaining as The Hateful Eight is, from the acting to the production design to the compelling score by Ennio Morricone, it’s doesn’t come close to some of his best work, including Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol. 1, and Inglorious Basterds. I think the film has a lot of interesting commentary and themes to mull over and the characters are unique and wildly original, but the story falls flat for me. Despite the lack in special features, the quality of them in getting a more personal look at the making of this film is top notch. The Blu-ray transfer is also very beautiful.

Special features include:

  • Beyond the Eight: A Behind-the-Scenes Look
  • Sam Jackson’s Guide to Glorious 70mm

Point Break 2015 Blu-ray Box Cover ArtPoint Break 2D/3D (2015) (Ericson Core) Rated PG-13 [1h 54min] – A young FBI agent infiltrates an extraordinary team of extreme sports athletes he suspects of masterminding a string of unprecedented, sophisticated corporate heists. Starring Edgar Ramirez, Luke Bracey, and Ray Winstone

Sadly, I’ve never seen the original Point Break starring Keanu Reeves, which allowed me to go in less bias toward this remake. However, not knowing the underlying plot details and character relationships in the original didn’t stop this from being a miserable viewing experience – it just probably made it less so if I would have. I think visually the action is fairly well shot, but the cinematography itself with the coloring and the texture of the digital film looks ugly. Everything is so brown and grey with any kind of life for such an extreme sports involved story. If it weren’t for the grimey look of the film, the 3D would be surprisingly well done. All of the characters are pretty hollow, the motivations are far from clear, and the direction this story takes is not good. Plus the movie is almost two hours long. The special features are nice in seeing how they did the stunts, but otherwise this movie is a waste of time.

Special features include:

  • Point Break: Rock Climbing
  • Point Break: Wingsuit Flying
  • Point Break: Snowboarding
  • Point Break: Motocross
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Trailers

Archer Season 6 Blu-ray Box Cover ArtArcher (Season 6) (Adam Reed) Rated TV-MA [22 min] –  Join everyone’s favorite spies in some sabotage and betrayal in Archer, season six. This animated half-hour comedy revolves around an international spy agency and the lives of its employees. Although their work of espionage, reconnaissance missions, wiretapping and undercover surveillance is daunting and dangerous, every covert operation and global crisis is actually just another excuse for the staff to undermine, sabotage and betray each other for personal gain. Starring H. Jon Benjamin, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Chris Parnell, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Adam Reed, and Lucky Yates

As much hate as Archer: Vice received, the International super spy returns to top form in Season 6. Even after all this time, the writers are still perfectly capable of coming up with the most ridiculous escapades for Archer with the best comedic timing in the game. All of the punchlines, one-liners, and physical gags are at the top of their game and should give fans a reason to return if they were turned off by Season 5.

Special features include:

  • Conan & Archer Battle Russian Mobsters
  • Slay – J
  • Cooking with Milton

Exposed Blu-ray Box Cover ArtExposed (Declan Dale) Rated R [1h 42min] – A police detective investigates the truth behind his partner’s death. The mysterious case reveals disturbing police corruption and a dangerous secret involving an unlikely young woman. Starring Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves, and Christopher McDonald

When used properly, Keanu Reeves can be more powerful than you could possibly imagine. John Wick proves that the actor still has some vigor left in him while maintaining a sense of vivid personality and finesse. Even with how campy Knock Knock is, Reeves’ delivery of lines and Keanu-ness is fully embraced. Now on the flip side of that, Exposed under utilizes his ability to be a presence on screen, much like John Travolta or Nicolas Cage. Exposed takes itself way too seriously and having Keanu Reeves in such a gritty role doesn’t work as well as it should. Regardless of this fact, the story itself is overly bloated in confused plot devices that attempt too much for how little scope and weight of stakes it carries throughout.

Special features include:

  • “Making Exposed” Featurette
  • Extended Cast Interviews
