Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for May 5, 2016. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with A.C.O.D., Just Friends, The Truman Show, There Will Be Blood, and many more. A.C.O.D. (Stu Zicherman) Rated R [1h 28min] – A grown man caught in the crossfire of his parents’ 15-year divorce discovers he was unknowingly part of a study on divorced children and is enlisted in a follow-up years later, which wreaks new havoc on his family. Starring Adam Scott, Richard Jenkins, Catherine O’Hara, Amy Poehler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clark Duke, Jane Lynch, and Jessica Alba

While there isn’t much I remember about 2013’s A.C.O.D., there’s a certain amount of perspective in its story that leads me to your consideration. According to divorcestatistics.org, “40 or possibly even 50 percent of marriages will end in divorce if current trends continue,” a subject few films rarely touch on. And even then, fewer regard the fallout of divorce and how that affects children, thus “A Child of Divorce.” A.C.O.D. is saved by its cast as most of the major themes and points it tries to get across hardly leave an impact. There are some good laughs to be had, but if you’re bored and find your Netflix queue waning, check this one out.

Pleasantville (Gary Ross) Rated PG-13 [2h 4min] – Two 1990s teenagers find themselves in a 1950s sitcom where their influence begins to profoundly change that complacent world. Starring Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels, Joan Allen

I haven’t seen Pleasantville in quite some time, but it’s one that I would like to revisit now in my adulthood – good thing it’s on Netflix now, eh? Especially in the evolved era of prejudices we are surrounded by now, it would be interesting to reflect on Pleasantville’s themes and how they reverberate through today’s current events.

Small Soldiers (Joe Dante) Rated PG-13 [1h 50min] – When missile technology is used to enhance toy action figures, the toys soon begin to take their battle programming too seriously. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, and David Cross

Small Soldiers will always hold a special place in my heart – I can’t believe it’s almost 20 years old, which is beyond terrifying beyond the fact that it features an army of mutilated barbies that want to kill Kirsten Dunst. Such a simple premise makes Small Soldier seem so pure in what it tries to accomplish, where if it were to be rebooted today there would I can only imagine how overly convoluted it could be. There’s romance, horror, heart, and action to be had in this late ’90s romp fest that your kids will love, and maybe even adults too.

South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (Trey Parker) Rated R [1h 21min] – When the four boys see an R-rated movie featuring Canadians Terrance & Phillip, they are pronounced “corrupted”, and their parents pressure the United States to wage war against Canada. Starring Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Mary Kay Bergman, and Isaac Hayes

If you’re someone who is enjoying the current seasons of South Park yet haven’t bore witness to the beauty that is its monumental, Oscar nominated film from 1999, then you can you yourself a favor and watch it now. You’re welcome.

There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson) Rated R [2h 38min] – A story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, and Ciarán Hinds

Love him or hate him, Paul Thomas Anderson doesn’t skimp on bringing audiences movies filled to the brim with plot and rich characters. And while There Will Be Blood simply was too much for me to grasp back when it debuted in 2007, I’d like to rewatch to better understand what the filmmaker wanted to express through it. This movie may not be fore everyone, but it’s one fans of cinema should digest once in their life.

The Truman Show (Peter Weir) Rated PG [1h 43min] – An insurance salesman/adjuster discovers his entire life is actually a T.V. show. Starring Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, and Natascha McElhone

If for some reason you haven’t seen The Truman Show, it is one of Jim Carrey’s best performances of his career. There is so much within Peter Weir’s hauntingly tragic feature that deserves multiple viewings.

Netflix and Chill Pick of the Week:

Just Friends (Roger Kumble) Rated PG-13 [1h 36min] – While visiting his hometown during Christmas, a man comes face-to-face with his old high school crush whom he was best friends with — a woman whose rejection of him turned him into a ferocious womanizer. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Faris, and Chris Klein

If you need to compromise with BAE or side chick or whoever you want to Netflix and Chill with, then Just Friends will more than suit your needs. It is easily one of the best romantic comedies around. And if you’re one of those who just can’t stand the thought of sitting through a romcom, Just Friends is chock-full of smart, delicious humor that is bearable throughout and will give your funny bone a tickle. Your S/O will get to watch Ryan Reynolds for 96 minutes while eating up the heartfelt story and you can have a gas with its witty sensibility. And just remember, “forgiveness is more than saying sorry.”
