After mining the ’80s for classic horror films to reboot, studios are now setting their sights on the ’90s as we are now seeing with this year’s It and now the 1999 Kiefer Sutherland joint Flatliners. Pulling together some hot new stars to update this medical horror, Ellen Page and Jamie Norton look to answer the question of what happens after we die as they induce death and bring each other back over and over again. After enduring repetitive revivals from the other side, what could possibly go wrong?
Advancement of technology aside, the movie swaps gender roles assigning Page’s character, Courtney Holmes, as the lead asking Norton’s character to join her on this wild ride. In the original Flatliners, it was Kiefer Sutherland who asks Julia Roberts to join him on this quest to seek the afterlife. Based on the just the first trailer alone, this reboot seems to be sticking pretty close to the 1999 original but with a more youthful, sexy spin for the times.
For fans of the Kiefer Sutherland version, dialogue is pulled directly from the original trailer, including the line “It’s a good day to die.” There’s a surprise cameo in the reboot which we won’t spoil here, but suggest that if you want to go in untainted to stay away from Wikipedia or IMDb.

In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.
