‘Dexter’ Season 7 Premieres Sunday, September 30

Dexter Season 7 Teaser

Dexter, everyone’s favorite anithero returns to the small screen tomorrow, Sunday, September 30 at 9pm ET/PT. Longtime fans of the show have been waiting for what’s in store for this season and it’s about damn time. All of this build up, everything we have gone through with the Bay Harbor Butcher, has finally led up to this moment. How will Dexter get out of this one?

I got into the Dexter craze a few years ago. The first three seasons were on Netflix Watch Instant and I was able to burn through those and the fourth season in a weekend. Needless to say, I was hooked. The Dark Passenger grabbed a hold of me and wouldn’t let go. I always heard about how incredible the show is and that I must see the fourth season. I believe the hype now.

After the fourth season ended there was a waning period. I wasn’t the biggest advocate of the second and third seasons, but I am definitely in support of them over the fifth and sixth. If you haven’t watched Dexter, I would start right now. I believe the seventh season will determine whether this show has any more gas left in the tank, but if not, the showrunners should start planning an exit strategy.

[FROM HERE ON OUT, BECAUSE THIS IS THE 7TH SEASON WE ARE GETTING INTO EXPECT HEAVY SPOILERS STARTING NOW]

Dexter Season 7 Poster

After Rita died, we were left with a broken Dexter. His mojo was lost and we were given this pathetic, mopey Dexter asking too many questions and not killing enough bad guys. In all honesty, the last two seasons were almost pointless. If we are to gain anything from them it’s that Deb was able to become strong enough to make lieutenant and catch Dexter during his ritualistic killings.

This all could have been done in the span of one season and we wouldn’t have had to deal with the ludicrous religion story arc in the sixth season and we definitely wouldn’t have had to have Dexter finding peace and the ability to move on after Rita’s death in the fifth season. These seasons were weak and could have used some tightening up. If you haven’t checked it out already, here’s the trailer for Dexter season 7:

Dexter has this formula where he starts the season with some sort of force he cannot quite understand, a character is introduced that helps him find the answers within himself, his identity is found out, there is a rush of adrenaline to tie up loose ends, Dexter kills the main objective for the season, and everyone ends up happy as a clam.

I hope now that Deb knows Dexter’s little secret, we can avoid this formula and start taking the show in a new direction. From the looks of this trailer, all signs point to yes. My main concern is why the hell did they have to introduce that weaselly little computer nerd who magically finds out Dexter’s secret? It was completely out of left field and hardly a story arc I want to follow. Can we just keep the main focus on Deb and Dexter’s relationship, one of the strongest attributes the show has left. This new season of Dexter features 12 new episodes bringing back everyone we know and love including Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar, Lauren Velez, C. S. Lee, David Zayas, and Desmond Harrington. Season 7 will also feature appearances by Calista Flockhart, Josh Cooke, Jason Gedrick, Yvonne Strahovski, and Ray Stevenson.

Dexter season 7 premieres Sunday, September 30 at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime with the first episode entitled, “Are You…?”
