Watch the Official Trailer for ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey Movie Trailer

We’re less than 4 days away until Peter Jackson unleashes his adaptation of The Hobbit to the world. The scary thing is, he was able to split up a 310 page book into three separate films. What’s even more terrifying is the fact that the official trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is absolutely stunning. Can Jackson top his own Lord of the Rings trilogy?

The trailer for An Unexpected Journeyis pretty straight forward. What will astound me is how well everything will tie together when it is shown on the big screen. As much as this trailer shows, it doesn’t tell us anything. There is hardly any dialogue to grasp the plot and we only see flashes of sequences that are never strung together. It’s a great trailer providing just a glimpse of what’s to come.

Breaking my own personal challenge of avoiding movie trailers this year, I caved and watched this one. I just couldn’t resist. I’ve read the book before so spoilers weren’t an issue, although I would have liked to have kept some visuals out of my mind before seeing it. This new trailer doesn’t start as light-hearted as the previous announcement trailer, but it has the same epic scale.

There is more peril and action, but as I said, it feels very spoiler free. Bilbo’s and Thorin’s personalities shine through more than the actual plot does, which actually makes me more anxious even though I know what The Hobbit is all about. These books are about people walking a far distance, so we have to at least be able to relate to the characters well, and me thinks An Unexpected Journey will do very well in that department.

Typically if you watch the trailer you’ll get a sense of what the climax may be, but not in this preview. They don’t give viewers one hint as to where this film will peak and at what point it will cut off before The Desolation of Smaug. We don’t see any spiders, there are no hints of forest elves. So how far is this film willing to take us to get to a stopping point for the sequel?

I’m not too worried. At whatever point they decide to stop off I’m sure I’ll just be begging for more. I expect An Unexpected Journey to be a big contender in certain categories of Awards season. There haven’t been too many movies of this magnitude this year and with such a rich history of success carried by Peter Jackson, there stands a pretty good chance we may see it happen again.
