Box Office Battlefield: ‘Best Man Holiday’ Against ‘Thor: The Dark World’

Box Office Battlefield Best Man Holiday' Against 'Thor The Dark World'

The weekend warriors of November 15, 2013 includes The Best Man Holiday. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of all the movie releases for the weekend. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard earned dollars. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.

Last weekend, Thor: The Dark World struck the box office hard, debuting with almost $86 million in domestic ticket sales. Not a single competitor could muster the ability to take on the God of Thunder. And this weekend only one dares to challenge the throne.

Does a 14 year old sequel in the making stand a chance against the House of Mouse Marvel? This is the Box Office Battlefield:

The Best Man Holiday Title Movie Logo

The Best Man Holiday (Rated R) 123 min – (Directed by Malcolm D. Lee) Starring Monica Calhoun, Morris Chestnut, Melissa De Sousa, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Harold Perrneau, and Eddie Cibrian

Synopsis: When college friends reunite after 15 years over the Christmas holidays, they will discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and romances to be ignited.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 63% • Audience – 88%

For a sequel that took 14 years to come to fruition, audiences who enjoyed these characters long ago will feel right at home. In a way it would be interesting to see if writer/director Malcolm D. Lee can pull off what Richard Linklater has done with the Before series of films to make this series a trilogy 14 years later, especially because this sequel came out of nowhere. It’s not the most engaging film that will appeal to everyone, but it’s innocuous holiday fun for anyone looking to catch up on where these characters have been up to. All of the actors fit in their shoes well and their characters grow enough to make this a decent sequel that won’t waste your time. MATINEE IT!

A small little indie entitled Nebraska, staring Bruce Dern and Will Forte, is making its rounds in LA and New York this weekend. I’ve heard good things, but have not had the chance to catch it yet.

With how much positivity came out of the box office last weekend with Thor: The Dark World, and not that great of a fan base for The Best Man Holiday, there isn’t much of a fight this weekend. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend shall be:

Winner: Thor: The Dark World
