Box Office Battlefield: ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ and ‘A Madea Christmas’

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug Teaser Richard Armitage

The weekend warriors of December 13, 2013 includes The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and A Madea Christmas. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of all the movie releases for the weekend. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard earned dollars. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.

Last weekend, Frozen overtook Catching Fire to claim the top spot on the battlefield. But now a new contender is about to enter the arena of popcorn and sticky floors, looking to solidify its status as a memorable trilogy for years to come.

Can Elsa and Anna of Arendelle cool off the heat of another big franchise or will Tyler Perry just upset the balance of the universe? My precious! This is the Box Office Battlefield:

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug Title Movie Logo

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Rated PG-13) 161 min – (Directed by Peter Jackson) Starring Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, , Lee Pace, Luke Evans, and Ken Stott

Synopsis: The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring. (Watch the trailer)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 74% • Audience –88%

If you were a fan of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey be prepared for more excitement and more let downs. Sure there is far more awesome action and fun characters that don’t spend a good quarter of the movie eating dinner, but there is little character development to draw you in to the story. The action guides you along scene by scene, hardly stopping to take a breath, and the various subplots between the elves, Gandalf, Bilbo, the dwarves, and Lake Town pull the viewer in so many directions it becomes too bloated with no emotional resonance. RENT IT!

Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas Title Movie Logo

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas (Rated PG-13) 105 min – (Directed by Tyler Perry) Starring Tyler Perry, Chad Michael Murray, Tika Sumpter, and Larry the Cable Guy

Sysnopsis: Madea dispenses her unique form of holiday spirit on rural town when she’s coaxed into helping a friend pay her daughter a surprise visit in the country for Christmas.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 20% • Audience – 81%

This smells worse than a trip to the bathroom after a visit to Chipotle.

Frozen and Catching Fire have been in theaters long enough for audiences to get a little antsy for something new. A Madea Christmas is too niche for it to pull out a W. The Desolation of Smaug has so many various ways to see it with fancy prices for 3D 48fps and IMAX 3D that it is bound to draw in more cash aside from its big franchise factor. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend shall be:

Winner: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
