Complete chaos will be heading to theaters this summer, June 20 with The Purge: Anarchy. Earlier today, Universal Pictures released the teaser trailer for the sequel of the unique concept, horror thriller The Purge. Taking the party out into the streets, this first trailer depicts hoodlums in masks with all sorts of bad intentions. Check out the first trailer for The Purge: Anarchy after the break.
For those who worry that The Purge: Anarchy will be the same formulaic horror franchise like Paranormal Activity or Saw think again. With how much mega cash The Purge made last year, it looks like Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes invested a little more money into expanding this little universe of terror. Writer/director/producer James DeMonaco returns in what I hope will be a more fleshed out story idea with more fun and excitement. The whole trapped in the house thing was pretty weak and I’m ecstatic about this change in scenery.

What’s lacking in the first Purge is likeable characters, stability, and a bigger picture. It ultimately dumbed itself down to a home invasion thriller. All that is about to change as DeMonaco has taken The Purge into the streets. There are biker gangs, armored cars patrolling the streets, a bus full of tattooed thugs, and one couple who must survive the night. Who will survive the night?
This trailer is everything a sequel to The Purge could be, but will it deliver? Taking it out of an enclosed location is one thing, what DeMonaco has hopefully done in Anarchy is provide us with a better sense of how this affects society, the citizens, and everyone else than just one family. There have already been some interesting questions asked, now all we need is for them to be materialized in this sequel. And the best part about The Purge universe is how crazy they can get, which the first film held back on. With the idea that anything is legal, the filmmakers should take chances on this one and show audiences what The Purge can do to society.
Here is the official plot synopsis, courtesy of IMDb.com:
A young couple works to survive on the streets after their car breaks down right as the annual purge commences.
And last but not least we have the teaser poster that also debuted today. I think it’s pretty cool artwork that represents the new order that New Founders of America in The Purge universe represent. In these political times we live in, it’s really eye catching.
And here’s a bonus video for fans of The Purge who like a little comedy in their dark humor:
