The Maze Runner Sequel, The Scorch Trials, Green-lit for a 2015 Release

The Scorch Trials 2015 Movie Release Date Official

Not even a week into its release and 20th Century Fox has announced they have green-lit the sequel to The Maze Runner. The Scorch Trials has been officially set for a 2015 release date, which will take heroes through harsher environments than what they encountered throughout the maze. Learn more about the production after the jump.

It was a very successful weekend for the young adult fiction adaptation. Earning itself an estimated $37.6 million, a haul that places the movie in third for top all-time earners for a September open, The Maze Runner was definitely welcomed with open arms. It felt like the onslaught of horrendous YA adaptations – The Host, Divergent, The Immortal Instruments, and Vampire Academy – have been washed away.

Here is Fox’s announcement via Twitter and the first look at concept art for The Scorch Trials:

With a hit on their hands, hoping to capitalize on that Hunger Games success, Fox is aiming for the The Scorch Trials to release in theaters on September 18th 2015, exactly 53 weeks from now. And for those who don’t follow film production too often, that isn’t a lot of time to complete a project with so much success riding on the balance.

Director Wes Ball has stated that he has been in pre-production mode and will be shooting fairly soon. The screenplay has already been written by T.S. Nowlin, who co-wrote the first movie Noah Oppenheim and Grant Pierce Myers. Sadly, based on IMDb, the film will be entitled The Maze Runner Chapter II: The Scorch Trials. How wordy and unappealing does that sound? They are following the exact same path to retain franchise continuity by keeping the name “The Maze Runner” in the title, when it has zero relation to the plot of the sequel.

The third book in the trilogy is entitled The Death Cure, and one could only assume it will have a 2016 release by the name The Maze Runner Chapter III: The Death Cure. At least with Star Wars, the title makes sense to the scope of the trilogy, The Maze Runner does not, and neither does The Hunger Games for the third and fourth movies.

Here is the plot synopsis of The Scorch Trials from the book cover [beware of spoilers for The Maze Runner]:

Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch. There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die. The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch—the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them. Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off. There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction—and they’re determined to survive.

The Maze Runner Chapter II: The Scorch Trials is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2015.
