Unfortunately news hit Community this week as Yvette Nicole Brown has made the decision to leave the show. The Greendale Seven will now be four, with Jeff (Joel McHale), Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Annie (Alison Brie), and Abed (Danny Pudi) still set to reprise their roles. Learn more about Brown’s departure after the break.
After being cancelled by NBC earlier this year and then revived by Yahoo! Screen, things were looking bright for Community. But as of yesterday, Brown, who portrays Shirley on the show, told TV Guide that she has decided to take her leave:
“My dad needs daily care and he needs me,” Brown says. “The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn’t do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.”
That’s a most admirable decision and we wish her the best. And executive producers Chris McKenna and Dan Harmon agree:
“Yvette was an integral part of Community and is irreplaceable. We are sad to see her go and wish her the very best.
I always appreciated Shirley’s presence on the show. She always had the voice of reason and always had some of the best one-liners. Brown will continue to appear on CBS’ reboot of The Odd Couple, as she states the multi-camera sitcom is more flexible to her schedule than that of Community’s single-camera approach. But she stresses the utmost appreciation for her time on the show.
“I can’t say enough how much I respect Sony and Dan for how they handled this profound change in my life.”
There has still be no word as to whether or not Donald Glover would be likely to return, and we can more than likely count out Chevy Chase. Jonathan Banks will also not be returning as he has committed his time to AMC’s Better Call Saul. I cross my fingers that Brie Larson will become a recurring cast member. Jim Rash and Ken Jeong will be returning this season at least.
Shirley’s absence has not yet been planned out, and knowing Harmon’s writing style, it won’t be until the final moments of the show. I wish she would at least come back for one episode or so to have a proper send off like Donald Glover.
It’s sad to see now only four of the infamous Greendale Seven will be returning this season, but there are talks of two new characters joining the halls this season. One, a female consultant that will help shape up Greendale, and the other is described as a retired salesman who is looking to reinvent himself.
Dan Harmon’s return was most welcome last season, and so I trust that he will make the right choices for us to fall in love with his show again on a different platform. Let’s hope she will at least return for the Community movie.
Community season six will return this fall on Yahoo! Screen.
