Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for March 24, 2016. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Daredevil Season 2, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, The Forbidden Kingdom, Documentary Now!, and more. Daredevil (Season 2) (Drew Goddard) Rated TV-MA [54min] – A blind lawyer, with his other senses superhumanly enhanced, fights crime as a costumed superhero. Starring Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal, Elodie Yung, Royce Johnson, Scott Glenn, and Vincent D’Onofrio

After having binged Daredevil Season 1 within a 24-hour time span I was still thirsty for more. This wildly unique world away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the ABC’s Agents of SHIELD, while still inhabiting the same canon of which these characters all exist, was just what I needed to believe in the vision of Kevin Feige and Marvel have for everyone’s favorite heroes. Daredevil is a refreshing change from the big movie blockbusters and the wacky adventures of Phil Coulson. This series takes the MCU to a darker, grittier, and more realized world. Having now 26 episodes of world building in Hell’s Kitchen – 39 if you count Jessica Jones – is incredibly rich and full of wondrous moments we’ve never seen the likes of in the other properties outside of Netflix. Imagine if we had about 25-35 Iron Man movies featuring Robert Downey Jr.? The opportunity to learn more about the character in that time frame and being thrust into his world for so many hours would be amazing.

With that in mind, what Netflix and Marvel Television have done with Season 2 of Daredevil to explore further into the depths of Hell’s Kitchen is fantastic. Not only that, but Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) are really able to walk on their own merits this time around. The second season expands each character amazingly well, and the introductions of The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung) into this universe are absolutely solid. Big props to the casting department for who they chose to embody these characters, as well as the writers who really fleshed out these new characters and provided fascinating challenges for our tripod to overcome.

While everything is bigger and better in Season 2, there are a few things I find Season 1 does better. Even though Foggy and Karen get to have their own fun and grow as characters, their overall plots don’t really have intersecting paths to Matt’s, which make the story a bit disjointed. The show doesn’t go off the rails when we switch to these characters, but their story arcs don’t feel as rewarding as much as they would if they all met together in the end to seize the day. And as much as I love Bernthal’s Punisher and Yung’s Elektra, and their relationship to Cox’s Daredevil, their plot lines don’t feel as built up to lead to as big of a climax as the first season with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin saga.

All in all, there is a lot of enjoyment to be had with Season 2. They set the series up nicely to work on its own good graces while also providing opportunities for Hell’s Kitchen to expand, almost bursting at the seams. I’ll be ready and eager for Season 3, but I hope it will be a little more focused.

I haven’t had a chance to check out this new Pee-wee Herman adventure, but one of my friend’s said it is “pretty funny”. I’m not a big fan of my friend’s humor, but I grew up watching Pee-wee’s Playhouse back in the day and wonder how well Reuben’s comedy works in today’s generation.

Avalanche Sharks (Scott Wheeler) Rated TV-MA [1h 22min] – Avalanche Sharks tells the story of a bikini contest that turns into a horrifying affair when it is hit by a shark avalanche. Starring Mendeluk, Kate Nauta, and Benjamin Easterday

These silly B-movies are never as good as you think they will be. You always end up feeling bad for the time you waste watching them, so you might as well use it as a good opportunity to Netflix and Chill. At least something productive should come out of it this way.
