This weekend proves to be a little more hopeful that last. With a little more horror leading up to Halloween, some childhood memories, and some little independent delights, this weekend of October 16, 2009 is a lot more promising.
The Stepfather (Penn Badgley, Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward) Michael Harding (Badgley) returns from military school to find his mother (Ward) living with her new boyfriend, David (Walsh). As the two men get to know each other, Michael becomes suspicious of the man in his mother’s life: Is he really the man of her dreams, or could David be hiding a dark side? Looks like a decent remake. I like Dylan Walsh’s acting and he could come off as a pretty crazy person in Nip/Tuck. If you like horror, you might want to stop by and check out this little remake, although I doubt it will make any money. Rent It
Where The Wild Things Are (Max Records, Catherine O’Hara, Forest Whitaker) Young, mischievous Max is sent to bed without his supper, but when his bedroom turns in to a magical jungle landscape filled with strange creatures, he embarks on a wild imaginary adventure. Some actually might have their hopes up to high for this film. They are definitely playing on child hood memories, yet this film may have deeper meaning and more thought than just a childrens’ book. It is definitely one to see, but don’t get your hopes up if it is not exactly how you expected it. Plus they added some things that were not in the book. Also check this film out in IMAX. See It
Paranormal Activity (Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat) After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence. There really is no explanation necessary. There has been so much hype that if you haven’t heard about this movie, seen the preview on tv, demanded it or all of the above, this movie should scare your pants off. SEE THIS MOVIE
Law Abiding Citizen (Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Leslie Bibb) After family man Clyde Shelton (Butler) is failed by the court system, he concocts a series of events designed to exact his revenge on the killers of his wife and daughter. And from inside his jail cell, the mastermind lures the prosecutor (Foxx) who orchestrated the unjust deal into his deadly plan. This film looks good on paper, but can it deliver. They have some pretty good actors, but this thriller of a Butler film looks half promising. Not one to see in the theaters most likely, but if you really like Butler or want some thrills in your life, by all means go ahead and see it. Rent It
New York, I Love You (Shia LaBeouf, Natalie Portman, Bradley Cooper) An anthology of love stories set in New York City. I saw this trailer a long time ago and was kind of interested. This movie has a ton of different love stories based in New York and each story seems to be directed by about 10 different directors. With almost 20+ big name actors floating around it might get a little confusing or you might get a little lost and lose your attention with this one. Rent it
Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White, Arsenio Hall, Tommy Davidson) A hero by the name of Black Dynamite (White) sets out on a mission to avenge the murder of his brother and to right the wrongs in his neighborhood. This film has got a lot of positive hype. A Undercover Brother with a serious tone, but with a good comedic tone. This looks funny but nothing too compelling to jump out of my seat. Rent it
