Box Office Battlefield: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, It’s Complicated, Sherlock Holmes, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

This Christmas be merry and go see a movie. There are a few zingers out there and some dingers. I’ll give you some tips on what movies to see this holiday season, one of the last weekends of 2009. What will you see?

It’s Complicated (Meryl StreepSteve MartinAlec Baldwin) During his son’s college graduation, Jane (Streep) hooks up with her ex-husband, Jake (Baldwin), who’s married to a younger woman. As if being your ex’s mistress isn’t tough enough, Jane also finds herself drawn to Adam (Martin), a smitten architect.

My Take: Looks ok, but nothing special. I think Baldwin is a little overrated when it comes to comedy and Steve Martin isn’t that special these days. It doesn’t seem that complicated……Rent it

Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.Jude LawRachel McAdams) Detective Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr.) and his stalwart partner Watson (Law) engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.

My Take: RDJ is already nominated for best actor in a comedy/musical for this film so thats pretty dandy. I think this movie should be pretty exciting and the onscreen duo of Law and RDJ is perhaps a great team. You can’t say no to this film. See it

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – Limited until 1/8 (Christopher PlummerLily ColeHeath Ledger) A story-telling doctor’s deal with the devil sends him scrambling to save his daughter on the eve of her 16th birthday.

My Take: With this being the last official film of Heath Ledger post The Dark Knight this would be a film you might want to see. This crazy look into a dream land of fantasy and a ridiculous imagination captivates you with all that it brings to the table. As a writer for Monty Python, Terry Gilliam, directs this fantastic film and this should be one you definitely need to see. See It

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (Jason LeeZachary LeviDrew Barrymore) Alvin, Simon and Theodore must put aside music superstardom and return to school, where they look to win a $25,000 prize in a battle of the bands contest in order to save their school’s music program. But the Chipmunks unexpectedly meet their match in three singing chipmunks known as The Chipettes — Brittany, Eleanor and Jeanette.

My Take: Weak sequel. Do I really need to say why you don’t need this in your life. Skip this

Don’t forget Nine (Rent) and Up In the Air (DEFINITELY SEE THIS MOVIE) expand to most theaters this weekend.
