Box Office Battlefield: ‘Edge of Darkness’ and ‘When In Rome’

Films have started to pick up after the wake of the Avatar destruction. What movies are coming out on the weekend of January 29, 2010? I’ll tell you! And this weekend we get a break from religious contexts and subplots. But will these movies gain your interest? I think I can help you with this decision.

When in RomeWhen In Rome

(Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel)  Beth (Bell) is a young, ambitious New Yorker who is completely unlucky in love. However, when she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love during a whirlwind trip to Rome, she finds herself aggressively pursued by a band of suitors.

My Take: Looks like something that had potential on paper and could be a an interesting love story, but falls short with over spastic comedy. It seems like on par with The Ugly Truth with its maturity level and direction. It is highly predictable as most romantic comedies go, but can be entertaining at the same time. I’m gonna go with a Rent on this one, maybe you could go on a date and see this, maybe.

Edge of Darkness Edge of Darkness

(Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston) As homicide detective Thomas Craven (Gibson) investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent (Winstone) tasked with cleaning up the evidence.

My Take: Looks like this could be a return for Gibson? Maybe? If you can stand that strange Boston accent he uses throughout the film. It reminds me of a lot like Taken meets Law Biding Citizen. RottenTomatoes has it at 61% so far, and for Gibson film these days, that’s pretty good I’d say. I’d go with a Rent or See it, it’s a toss up. Maybe see it for a matinee price.
