The weekend warriors for October 12, 2012 include Argo, Sinister, Seven Psychopaths, and Here Comes the Boom. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of the upcoming movie releases for the weekend. In the film industry, each weekend, movie studios enter the glorious battlefield for your hard earned dollars, but not everybody can afford to see every film that is released. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.
Last weekend, Taken 2 was able to topple over Hotel Translyvania, while Pitch Perfect wasn’t able to stack up against the competition. For the weekend of October 12, 2012 we see a meta comedy of the most epic proportions, Kevin James continue to make a fool out of his career, Ben Affleck recreate history, and a film critic write his way into the horror history books.
Argo (Directed by Ben Affleck) Starring Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, and Alan Arkin
Synopsis: As the Iranian revolution reaches a boiling point, a CIA ‘exfiltration’ specialist concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador.
I’ve only heard good things about this film. Ben Affleck has been on record to produce great material, such as The Town. It feels like a very compelling story, and hopefully it delivers the intensity it promises. I believe Argo will have some great Oscar buzz heading into January, so this one is not one to miss. SEE IT!
Sinister (Directed by Scott Derrickson) Starring Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, and Fred Dalton Thompson
Synopsis: Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.
This here movie is definitely an event film. You should take all of your friends to go see it and have a good time. It has a strange sense of tone, and the story is not considerably interesting or deep, but it has high ambitions and definitely brings some haunting moments on screen. SEE IT!
Here Comes the Boom (Directed by Frank Coraci) Starring Kevin James, Salma Hayek, Henry Winkler, and Greg Germann
Synopsis: A high school biology teacher looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent extra-curricular activities from being axed at his cash-strapped school.
There isn’t much to say about Kevin James’ new film Here Comes the Boom. By now you are either on the Kevin James bandwagon or you avoid his movies like the plague. He basically peaked in Hitch, and I can’t really see this film boosting his career to new heights. SKIP IT!
Seven Psychopaths (Directed by Martin McDonagh) Starring Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken
Synopsis: A struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster’s beloved Shih Tzu.
With such a star studded cast, it is hard to believe this film did so poorly this past weekend in the box office. Looking back at the marketing, you can tell that they didn’t know how to promote this film to mass audiences. It is a unique film, hilarious and very meta, Seven Psychopaths is very refreshing. The writing was solid, the actors were terrific, and the story brings the characters together in an interesting fashion. SEE IT!
Aside from these major releases, an interest slasher horror came out called Smiley. The story looks kind of stupid, but the image of the killer is kind of frightening. I would recommend this as a rainy day rent or something you would check out at a cheap matinee since it’s October.
For Breaking Bad fans, Smashed is an indie romantic dramedy starring Aaron Paul that looks mediocre. A foreign indie film also released from France, War of the Buttons which didn’t really appeal to my indie sense, but maybe for those who dig foreign flicks may want to check out the trailer to see for themsleves.
(Sorry for pushing this late, I was on vacation this weekend.)

Box Office Battlefield is a pish posh of how I believe these films will play out based on what I have or have not seen from previews, various marketing materials, or have heard via word of mouth. I mostly do not take into consideration the Rotten Tomato scores or read critics’ reviews before I see films.
