First Look at Pixar’s Newest Short Film ‘The Blue Umbrella’

Pixar Blue Umbrella First Look

From Pixar Animation Studios, director Saschka Unseld and producer Marc Greenberg presents The Blue Umbrella. This new short film feature brings love back to its roots. A boy meets girl story, one can only imagine how sincere and affectionate Pixar will take this cute little movie. Check out a clip along with the poster after the break.

Emotional depth and Pixar. The two go practically hand-in-hand. From Wall-E to Up, the animation studio is notorious for pulling the heartstrings of its audience. From watching the first clip of The Blue Umbrella, I am already giddy with anticipation to see the final result. See for yourself below:

Adorable, right? The music is lovingly playful and the superb animation is what we’ve come to expect. It would be quite hard to anthropomorphize umbrellas, and the only way to make it work is to slap animated facial features. I’m curious as to whether or not they will show the people holding the umbrellas, but I would assume not. (Click on the poster to enlarge)

Pixar The Blue Umbrellas Poster

Here is the official synopsis of The Blue Umbrella courtesy of Pixar and Walt Disney Studios:

It is just another evening commute until the rain starts to fall, and the city comes alive to the sound of dripping rain pipes, whistling awnings and gurgling gutters.  And in the midst, two umbrellas—one blue, one not—fall eternally in love.

Recent Pixar short films, such as Partysaurus Rex, La Luna, Day and Night, Dug’s Special Mission, and Partly Cloudy have all been more focused on having fun. I like that Pixar is toning it down and creating an intimate romance piece. The Blue Umbrella feels a lot like Paperman, which recently won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. We’ll know if a few months whether The Blue Umbrella could earn the same fate.

The Blue Umbrella opens in theaters on June 21, 2013, in front of Monsters University.
