The weekend warrior of September 6, 2013 includes Riddick. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of all the movie releases for the weekend. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard earned dollars. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.
Last weekend, One Direction: This is Us took the top spot at the box office with the The Butler right on its heels. In a surprise turn of events, the small Spanish-language indie, Instructions Not Included took a honorable fourth place finish in only 348 theaters.
It’s pretty slim pickens this weekend in terms of mainstream new releases, but there are a handful of new indies if that piques your interest. Can Riddick stop the ever popular One Direction, or will this sequel be off key? I am GROOT Riddick! This is the Box Office Battlefield:
Riddick (Rated R) 119 min – (Directed by David Twohy) Starring Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Dave Bautista, Katee Sackhoff, and Jordi Mollà
Synopsis: Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick’s past.
Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 46% • Audience – 59%
Riddick is Riddick. (Watch the trailer here). Vin Diesel has never proven to be a terrible action star, it’s just that Riddick is such a lukewarm franchise that there can’t be too much pleasure from the a-typical movie goer. Fans of Riddick should eat this up, but don’t expect this film to blow up the characters status in Hollywood’s eyes. The dark, gritty action and alien horrors should be a decent time in the theater, but you could find something more productive this weekend to do. RENT IT!
If Riddick is something that doesn’t float your boat to start off your fall, than perhaps a few indies will. There is the French-romantic comedy about typist and her boss, Populaire; a documentary about the secret life of J.D. Salinger, Salinger; there’s a Peter Fonda drama about a billionaire who questions his life, The Ultimate Life; and an Ellen Page movie about a massage therapist, Touchy Feely. But as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend shall be:
Winner: Riddick
