Box Office Battlefield: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ vs. ‘Blended’

X-Men Days of Future Past Teaser Trailer Hugh Jackman

The weekend warriors of May 23, 2014 includes X-Men: Days of Future Past and Blended. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard-earned dollars, Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others and determine who will be victorious.

Last weekend, Godzilla squashed the competition like the worthless bugs that they are, but this Memorial Day Weekend the king of monsters has a whole new problem to worry about. Can the X-Men come together again to save moviegoers from a bombastic summer movie season? SNIKT! This is the Box Office Battlefield:

X-Men Days of Future Past Title Movie Logo

X-Men: Days of Future Past (Bryan Singer) Rated PG-13 [131 min] – The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants. Starring Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 90% • Audience – 95%

I sadly was not able to see this earlier this week, but I plan to in a few hours as I’m typing this. But here’s what others have said.

“[Singer is] reborn – deft, elegant, spring-heeled – in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The special effects don’t bog him down: They lift the movie to a surreal and more emotional dimension.” – David Edelstein (Vulture)

“Painfully, charmingly earnest, and intensely entertaining even when it’s not making much sense. Does that one incredible action sequence make up for a creaky plot and Booboo Stewart? It’s up for debate.” – Vince Mancini (FilmDrunk)

This is a no brainer. You’re going to see this, I’m going to enjoy this. You can’t stop the X-Men train. SEE THIS MOVIE. PROBABLY NOT IN 3D THOUGH!

Blended Title Movie Logo

Blended (Frank Coraci) Rated PG-13 [117 min] – After a bad blind date, a man and woman find themselves stuck together at a resort for families, where their attraction grows as their respective kids benefit from the burgeoning relationship. Starring Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Kevin Nealon

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 15% • Audience – 64%

You’ve either made up your mind or not if Adam Sandler movies are your cup of tea. But that tea could have been tainted over the last couple of years. I have not seen this terrible looking movie, but here are a few words from folks who have seen it:

“There’s a tenderness to the story that should connect with modern moviegoing (blended) families but the film is held back by Sandler’s usual low-brow humor and cheap gags.” – Ben Kendrick (ScreenRant)

“Most of “Blended” has the look and pacing of a three-camera sitcom filmed by a bunch of eighth graders and conceived by their less bright classmates.” – A.O. Scott (New York Times)

No. Just plain no. Haven’t we had enough of Adam Sandler? SKIP IT!

Is there really a question as to what will win this weekend? Honestly, Adam Sandler movies can go straight back into the dumpster where they came from. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend shall be:

Winner: X-Men: Days of Future Past
