Hot off the heels of the success of their show, Key & Peele on Comedy Central, comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are now in talks with Paramount Pictures to produce a movie starring everyone’s favorite easily agitated substitute teacher, Mr. Garvey. The character, in question, was derived from a skit performed on their television show, Key & Peele. Learn more about Substitute Teacher after the jump.
Whether or not Key, Peele, and Paramount will be able to make a full-fledged movie out of a gimmicky character from a short skit remains to be seen. Films such as Wayne’s World, Night at the Roxbury, and Coneheads have all found their own cult following after they were adapted from Saturday Night Live. Out of all the hit sketches to come out of Key & Peele, it’s interesting that this would be the one to interest the likes of Paramount Pictures. Entertainment Weekly spoke with the comedy duo on this project:
“We’re in negotiations at Paramount to make a ‘Substitute Teacher’ movie. Two of our writers are penning it. Well, they’re not penning it as we speak — it’s getting there.”
However, both Key and Peele are not running short on job opportunities anytime soon. In addition to the Substitute Teacher with Paramount, Key and Peele are also producing a reboot of the classic 1984 romp, Police Academy. Helping the comedy duo revamp the 80’s pop culture film are actor Ike Barinholtz and producer Dave Stassen. Both comic writers are also involved with another popular television series, The Mindy Project. Many may also remember Ike Barinholtz from his earlier work as a castmember on the sketch comedy show Mad TV.
Both comic writers will be working on the script for the Police Academy reboot. And as if that wasn’t enough, in a strange turn of events, Peele also plans to direct a horror film with Darko Entertainment; a daring venture for someone whose previous credits involve comedy.
Regardless of whether Substitute Teacher may flop, it’s clear that Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are in high demand at the moment. It looks like we’ll be seeing a lot from the duo in the coming years.
Key & Peele Season 4 is now airing Wednesday nights at 10:30 pm on Comedy Central.
