FANTASTIC BEASTS Plot Details, Cast, and Character Descriptions Officially Revealed

There has been much mystery surrounding the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them plot. What was originally conceived to be a faux documentary based on the life of Newt Scamander, official plot details have now been confirmed. So grab a butter beer and rejoice because not only do we know what the Fantastic Beasts plot is, we also have all the major character descriptions.

Set in the United States during the roaring ’20s, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will now be a full-blown expansion of the Harry Potter Universe. The project was warmly received by fans, but many of us muggles were wondering how they were going to turn an educational catalog into a movie trilogy. However this catalog, like Newt’s magical case he carries, is bigger-on-the-inside than it might appear.

Author and creator J.K. Rowling, who up until this point has only had creative input in the Harry Potter franchise films, penned film’s script as her first ever screenplay. Here’s the official plot synopsis for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly:

Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander comes to New York with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK. Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous… get out of their case.

Yesterday we got our first look at Fantastic Beasts production images, and now we can put names to faces as Entertainment Weekly also presented character descriptions with their coverage:

Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander – An eccentric globe-hopping English “magizoologist” wizard who’s far more comfortable around beasts and creatures than he is around other people. Comes to New York on a quest with his case full of magical habitats containing rare and endangered species.

As soon as this project was announced, Eddie immediately came to mind. Excited to see him take on this role.

Katherine Waterston as Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein – An ambitious worker at the Magical Congress of the United States of America (aka MACUSA, the U.S. version of the Ministry of Magic) who meets Newt. Tina is relegated to an office well below her abilities after she stood up for the wrong person. She longs to fight for what’s right.

Who did she stand up for and what was the cause she is championing? Also predicting she will be Newt’s love interest.

Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein – Tina’s younger sister and roommate, a big-hearted free-spirit “legilimens” who can read minds.

Jealous, I want to read minds.

Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski – An optimistic No-Maj (aka Muggle) factory worker/aspiring baker who gets introduced to the wizarding world when he meets Newt. Fun fact: He’s the Harry Potter franchise’s first Muggle main character.

Suh-weet, now all of us muggles can feel included.

Colin Farrell as Graves – A powerful auror and the right-hand man of the American wizarding world’s president.

Collin Farrell typically goes for dark and broody. I’ll be interested to see if he will play Graves this way or if he breaks away from that.

Samantha Morton as Mary Lou – The narrow-minded leader of the fanatical Second Salemers, a group looking to expose and destroy wizards and witches.

Sounds like we have our baddy here, can she live up to the wretchedness of Dolores Umbridge?

Ezra Miller as Credence – Perhaps the cast’s most mysterious character. He’s Mary Lou’s troubled adopted son.

I love Ezra Miller, and whenever mystery and troubled are involved, you know this is right up his alley. I’m excited to see how this character pans out.

How do you think these characters will fit into the beloved Harry Potter universe? With absolutely nothing to base their characters on, do you think Newt and the rest will be as memorable as those who were fully developed over the course of seven novels?

Directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them  stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Faith Wood-Blagrove, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight, and Ron Perlman. The film hits theaters on November 18, 2016.

Addams Family Values

Addams Family Values (Barry Sonnenfeld) Rated PG-13 [94 min] – A comical Gothic horror-movie-type family tries to rescue their beloved uncle from his gold-digging new love. Starring Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci [Watch the Trailer]

If you’re looking for that perfect Thanksgiving movie to get you into the holiday spirit, Addams Family Values is what you seek. Anytime I rewatch this classic family film I’m always surprised by all the little quips I missed when I was a young lad. There’s so much hilarious adult content sprinkled through dark humor that it’s easy for kids to misinterpret the humor while adults get the last laugh.

Half Baked Dave Chappelle

Half Baked (Tamra Davis) Rated R [82 min] – The story of three not so bright men who come up with a series of crazy schemes to get a friend out of jail. Starring Dave Chappelle, Guillermo Díaz, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams, and Rachel True [Watch the Trailer]

I must have watched Half Baked a good 100 times throughout high school and college. The Dave Chappelle era was so strong that it was hard to resist. It’s a highly quotable movie, the camaraderie between friends is fantastic, and everyone is just plain hilarious. One of the all-time best comedies in my opinion.

Master of None Aziz Ansari Netflix

Master of None (Aziz Ansari, Alan Yang) Rated TV-MA [30 min] – New Yorker Dev takes on such pillars of maturity as the first big job, a serious relationship, and busting sex offenders on the subway. Starring Aziz Ansari, Noël Wells, Eric Wareheim, Lena Waithe, Kelvin Yu, and H. Jon Benjamin [Watch the Trailer]

First things first, I had no idea Aziz Ansari was as young as he is, 32. I thought he was at least upper 30s. Secondly, Master of None looks like a perfect balance of laughs and feels that should spark an emotional accord with everyone. I’m anticipating the series when it premieres tomorrow, Friday, November 6!

Movies on Blu-ray

Inside Out (Pete Docter and Ronaldo Del Carmen) Rated PG [94 min] – After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.Starring Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Lewis Black, and Phyllis Smith [Watch the trailer]

One of the most emotionally fueled movies of the year, literally, Inside Out proves Pixar still has a lot of amazing original story ideas left in their brain trust. It’s a fantastic exploration of the mind through colorful characters and impeccably crafted visuals. All of the special features on this disc consist of a ton of juicy tidbits that make the experience even more inspiring. A new short furthering the story of the characters, “Riley’s First Date,” is really cute and proves that these two features actually warrant the necessity of a sequel. The deleted scenes puts into light the importance of editing and storytelling because Inside Out would have been a completely different movie with the way they originally conceived Joy. Inside Out is by far one of the best uses of your time this year.

Special features include:

  • Riley’s First Date? (In-Home Exclusive Animated Short Film)
  • Lava (Theatrical Short Film, Presented in 2D & 3D)
  • Story of the Story
  • Paths to Pixar: The Women of Inside Out
  • Mixed Emotions
  • Mapping the Mind
  • Our Dads, the Filmmakers
  • Into the Unknown: The Sound of Inside Out
  • The Misunderstood Art of Animation Film Editing
  • Deleted Scenes:
    • Riley Grows Up
    • Joy’s Decline
    • Misdirection
    • Construction
  • Audio Commentary
  • Mind Candy
  • Inside Out Trailers

Toy Story That Time Forgot (Steve Purcell) Rated TV-G [22 min] – It’s a post Christmas play date and the toys have to go up against the fearsome and aggressive new dino toys. Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Kristen Schaal, Kevin McKidd, Emily Hahn, and Wallace Shawn

This has to be one of the best short films Pixar has made so far in the Toy Story universe. It has a lot of heart, the new toys are hilarious, and the little world created for this short is well thought out. In these seasonal, longer shorts, Pixar is putting more emphasis on secondary characters. In Toy Story of Terror it’s Jesse, and here in Toy Story That Time Forgot it’s Trixie. These bite-sized shorts bring a lot of joy to my face and I hope they continue making them.

Special features include:

  • Reptillus!
  • Commentary
  • Toy Story Goes to Comic-Con
  • My Unexpected Friend
  • Battlesaurs Animated Opening
  • Deleted Scenes with Intros & Outros:
    • Battlesaurs Christmas
    • Light of Play
    • Prisoners of Bone
    • SOS
    • Trixie’s Proposal

Vacation (John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein) Rated R [99 min] – Rusty Griswold takes his own family on a road trip to “Walley World” in order to spice things up with his wife and reconnect with his sons. Starring Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Skyler Gisondo, and Steele Stebbins

Vacation adds fuel to the fire in that it proves we need to stop creating comedy sequels years past their predecessors. Happy Gilmore is a wonderfully entertaining movie, and the idea of developing a sequel is groan worthy; exactly how I felt every minute watching Vacation. The jokes are terribly eye-roll inducing and the characters are all moronically hardly resonating. The best thing Vacation has to offer are the various cameos.

Special features include:

  • Return to Walley World
  • The Griswold Odyssey
  • Gag Reel
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Georgia

The End of the Tour (James Ponsoldt) [Limited] Rated R [106 min] – The story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace, which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking epic novel, ‘Infinite Jest.’ Starring Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Anna Chlumsky, and Mamie Gummer

I’ve never read any of David Foster Wallace’s works, but after watching The End of the Tour a foundation of interest has been built. The dynamic between Eisenberg and Segel is absolutely incredible to watch because the their interactions on screen feel wholeheartedly organic. I was hanging on every word the two exchanged as if I was watching magic happen before my eyes or a debate I actually cared about. In this characterization of Wallace himself, as portrayed by Segel, the author comes across as a very layered and complex individual and I’m now intrigued at how his persona would be carried into his writing.

Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary by Director James Ponsoldt, Screenwriter Donald Margulies, and Actor Jason Segel
  • “Behind the Tour” Featurette
  • A Conversation with Composer Danny Elfman
  • Deleted Scenes

Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas (Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh) Rated TV-G [43 min] – An elf leaves the North Pole to find his dad, who is on the naughty list. Starring Mark Hamill, Jim Parsons, Kate Micucci, and Ed Asner

I’m not entirely sure who thought remaking Jon Favreau’s Elf into a stop-motion animated film with Buddy, but it was completely unnecessary. The live-action Will Ferrell movie is already enough of a children’s movie to be fun for all ages, and choosing Jim Parsons (CBS’s The Big Bang Theory) as the voice for Buddy, in a musical nonetheless, was a poor choice too. Buddy’s already kind of annoying with his child-like humor and by giving him the voice of Jim Parsons makes him unbearable, especially when he sings.

Special features include:

  • “Elf-in’ All The Way: Inside Buddy’s Recording Sessions.”
Batman Adam West

Television Series

Batman: The Complete Third Season (1966–1968) ( William Dozier, Bill Finger, and Lorenzo Semple Jr.) Rated TV-G [30 min] – The Caped Crusader battles evildoers in Gotham City in a bombastic 1960s parody of the comic book hero’s exploits. Starring Adam West, Burt Ward, Alan Napier, Neil Hamilton, and Stafford Repp

The original Batman series starring Adam West is all about fun detective high jinks. There isn’t any overarching plot threads, it’s not very serialized, and all of the characters maintain their surface level comic roots. The third season boasts some pretty good episodes if you’re a collector.
