NO NO NO NO NO Saw 8 and 9?
Ok, although I love the Saw franchise as much as the next horror film lover, this has just got to stop. Jigsaw/John Kramer is a creative and calculating villain in these movies and has been one of the greatest faces of horror and he has only been around for almost five years. Back when the fourth film was done, I was led to believe that there would only be six. I laughed at this when I first heard about it, but I waited to see what would happen. The story itself is ingenious, new and inventive, but getting very stale; especially with the 5th film. And now reports of Saw 8 & 9 with not even the 7th one produced yet, what?
I’ll give you that the first film had its’ fun. Saw was different, unique and changed the pace for horror back in 2004. After Saw, horror films had to step the bar up in gore and scare factor such as The Hills Have Eyes remake, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and The Descent. This was a great film to re-engergize the struggling horror genre; I Know What You Did Last Summer, Darkness Falls, The Faculty, Urban Legend, Disturbing Behavior, and H20.
Saw 2 & 3 pushed the bar even further for the franchise and created story. These two were the ones to push the limit of what the people behind Saw could do with their plot twists, torture devices and the ever mysterious Jigsaw. Even with new characters being brought into the scene, the movies never left their roots of the ultimate plot behind John’s motives. Although these movies were made one year after another, they never seemed to lose steam.
With Saw 4, I believe to be the best of the franchise, this was the one to hit the peak of the story. The twists and plot flashbacks had it all. They told the real story behind John Kramer and filled almost every answer to the franchise. I do believe that this story actually had a real story to it as well as it unfolded some of the best character development of all four movies.
Saw 5……was disappointing to many fans. This was proven with lack of character, story development and a lot of confusion. I felt that they were just trying way too hard. Even the torture devices seemed to lack and had no imagination. Everything seemed to be stretched and the plot was just flimsy trying to fill in gaps. And although they tried to introduce more twists and cliffhangers, something was still missing from what could have been a good movie.
Which brings us to Saw 6, which I hear is suppose to be a hell of a lot better than that 5th movie. This is a 6th movie in a horror franchise and hasn’t even gone straight to DVD, which is a huge accomplishment. If people are still interested and still going to the theaters to see what happens next year after year, then they most likely will still end up in the theater. Something better be mind blowing in this 6th film or else I’m afraid this once growing franchise will be just another Freddy Vs Jason or H20. It is beginning to look like that when they are already planning for a Saw 8 & 9 when Saw 7th hasn’t even been filmed and 6 hasn’t even been in theaters yet. We will just have to wait and see what Saw 6 will have in store for us.
