After this weekend, the force will not be with George Lucas. According to Cinematical and USA Today, the Harry Potter franchise will be well on its way to capturing the title of the highest grossing franchise in cinema history, according to BoxOfficeMojo. The Star Wars franchise in its entirety, yes, including those prequels, have earned up to $1.9 billion in domestic box office sales with its six films. Currently the Harry Potter franchise holds at $1.7 billion in domestic ticket sales up to date with its respective six films.
With the forth coming Deathly Hallows Part 1 film, one could assume that Potter will successfully surpass Star Wars as the largest grossing film franchise in history. With only two films left, I would assume that Harry Potter could land some where around $2.4-2.7 billion in all.But with the ever looming 3D conversions of all of the Star Wars films, George Lucas may be able to capture the lead again after it is all said and done.
Potter films average around $285 million a pop, so after the first part of the last book adaptation ends its theatrical run, Harry Potter should be the number one crowning franchise before the second part comes to theaters.
I still believe J.K. Rowling is rolling around on a pile of money if she is not sitting a top of her golden throne in her platinum mansion where the grass is made of one hundred dollar bills and she holds the key to Walt Disney’s cryogenic tube.

Kind of an unfair statement to be made. There are only 6 Star Wars movies compared to the eight for HP. Good point about SW 3D probably restoring the balance. I’m going to look up the Bond franchise you would think with over 20 movies they would have racked up some major points.
Bond has only made $1.6 from what I just saw on BOM
