Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby Screenshots from ‘Dredd’

Dredd Karl Urban

Mystery has surrounded the Judge Dredd reboot since its inception. But now fans of the franchise, and those interested in the film, can rest a little easier now that these screenshots have surfaced. Looking at Dredd based on just a visual standpoint alone, I’d have to say that they’ve got the look of this film down.

I’ve never been a big fan of the Sylvester Stallone classic from 1995, nor did I ever think it needed a reboot, but something about this Dredd has me keeping an eye on it – especially after seeing these screenshots. Let’s just hope there is no Rob Schneider like character in this re-imagining of the franchise.

We do know is that Dreddtakes a little more serious approach to the original comic, unlike the goofiness that appeared in the Stallone film. I may not know much about Judge Dredd, but Karl Urban does look like he fits the role.

The plot synopsis and images below comes courtesy of /Film:

Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. Peter Travis directed the film from a script by Alex Garland. Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey co-star.

What bothers me is having Olivia Thirlby as what it appears to be Dredd’s sidekick. And what is she doing without a helmet? She must know what she is doing because she is blowing someone’s brains out in one of the screenshots below. Good for her. I loved Urban in J.J. Abram’s Star Trek as Bones, but seeing her in Juno and No Strings Attached makes me wonder how she’ll do in this gritty action flick.

Dredd opens up in theaters September 21, 2012 in 2D and 3D.
