Soccer isn’t just for the men. As the picture conveys above, these women are willing to drop kick you in the face at a moments notice in order to win. As the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games move forward we are headed this week into the final first round of women’s football. Team USA is sitting very pretty up top alongside Brazil and Great Britain, but there are still a few contenders vying for those quarterfinal spots.
Because of the grueling intensity that is football (soccer), the first rounds of the women’s division began 2 days prior before the actual 2012 Olympic Games had begun. In the first round against France, USA did not start off too well. Within the first 15 minutes, France had a 2-0 lead on the Americans. Shaking off the first game jitters, team USA fought back with a huge comeback, winning the match 4-2.
USA will face DPR Korea next who had lost to France 5-0 in the second first round match, but who had defeated Columbia by two scores. Will DPR Korea be able to fend off the Americans for an upset?
Great Britain and Brazil have been dominating their group, and they will face off against each other in the final match of the first round. This will be a match everyone will be looking at. Both teams should be able to advance to the quarterfinals no matter the outcome though, but they may meet again in the final rounds.
Canada, France, and DPR Korea are the ones who need to win their next matches in order to gain any chance of advancing to the quarter finals. France should be able to beat Columbia, but Canada may have a hard time defeating Sweden who may also have a shot at the quarterfinals.
I will be cheering on our controversial gals from the US. Hopefully goalkeeper Solo will be more concerned about the game than Tweeting hate to Brandi Chastain.
