Aside from the 10km marathons for both men and women, swimming in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Gameshave come to a close. With records shattered, dreams come true, and surprise performances, this year’s Olympic Games have been pretty phenomenal just within the first week. Missy Franklin and Ruta Meilutyte are just a few of the stunning highlights of this year’s games and you can see them all after the break!
It simply astounds me the amount of athleticism comes from these games every four years. Not only has men’s swimming been fantastic, but the women’s have held their own, creating their own excitement. Being only 15 years old, Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte won two gold medals this year and shocked the world. Missy Franklin was able to defend her gold medal from the 2008 Beijing games in the 200m Backstroke to become the first woman to win back to back golds in that event.
Winning these games does not come easy, and I can only imagine how much grueling, intense training each athlete had to go through to get where they are today. It will be quite exciting next year to see if the Americans can defend their titles and stay up on top without Michael Phelps competing in the 2016 games. Without him electrifying the pool, it will definitely be a different atmosphere.
