Box Office Battlefield: Warm Bodies, Bullet to the Head, and Stand Up Guys

Box Office Battlefield Warm Bodies Bullet to the Head

The weekend warriors for February 1, 2013 includes Warm Bodies and Bullet to the Head, along with a limited release of Stand Up Guys. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of all the movie releases for the weekend. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard earned dollars. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.

This past weekend, every movie should feel ashamed for themselves because Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters topped the box office with less than $20 million. Movie 43 was an embarrassment to the comedy genre. And absolutely no one cared to see Schwarzenneger two weekends in a row. Hopefully this weekend will find better results.

Will the dead be able to revive this miserable slump we’ve been in or will Stallone be able to form coherent sentences long enough to keep our interest? Guhhhhhhhhhhrabblerabble. This is the Box Office Battlefield:

Warm Bodies Title

Warm Bodies (Rated PG-13) – Directed by Jonathan Levine. Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, John Malkovich, Rob Coddry and Analeigh Tipton

Synopsis: After R (a highly unusual zombie) saves Julie from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 76% • Audience – 77%

I cannot champion this movie enough (it made my highly anticipated horrors of 2013 for a reason). If you haven’t been convinced to see Warm Bodies based on the trailer, the posters, and the first four minutes of the film than my diagnosis is that you may be the undead yourself my friend. This is a sweet, witty film that is an absolute fun time in the theaters. It’s a good movie to see on a date, with some friends, or by yourself. Sky’s the limit. Warm Bodies is definitely a generational movie, some folks over the age of 40 may not understand this movie, but it’s worth checking out as a rental. SEE IT!

Bullet to the Head Title

Bullet to the Head (Rated R) – Directed by Walter Hill. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Momoa, Christian Slater, and Sung Kang

Synopsis: After watching their respective partners die, a New Orleans hitman and a Washington D.C. detective form an alliance in order to bring down their common enemy.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 47% • Audience – 75%

My first reaction to Bullet to the Head is how horrible of a title this is. Second, Stallone looks like beat up leather. Last, there doesn’t seem to be any kind of personality other than flat, glossed over action beats where Sly comes to pick up his paycheck. I’ll admit, I compared this movie to The Last Stand (a surprisingly good movie) when I said they were very unwanted movies of 2013, but Bullet to the Head just seems like… well, a bullet to the head. SKIP IT!

Stand Up Guys Title

Stand Up Guys (Rated R) [Limited] – Directed by Fisher Stevens. Starring Al Pacino, Alan Arkin, Christopher Walken, and Julianna Margulies

Synopsis: A pair of aging con men try to get the old gang back together for one last hurrah before one of the guys takes his last assignment — to kill his comrade.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 31% • Audience – 54%

There isn’t much to say about Stand Up Guys. It looks like a very boring character piece that hangs on a single dilemma for 94 minutes. The trailer feels one-note and dry with very few rewarding moments between these two influential actors. This also could be my thoughts based on the critics’ tomato meter. Maybe Stand Up Guys will surprise me. But I doubt it. RENT IT!

For the horror fanatics, The Haunting in Connecticut’s sequel releases this weekend with The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of GeorgiaWhat does Georgia have to do with Connecticut? I couldn’t tell you. But I know I wasn’t a big fan of the first film and I don’t see too many people rushing out for the next installment either.
