A24 Films Acquires David Michôd’s Latest, ‘The Rover’

A24 Films Acquire David Michôd’s Latest Film 'The Rover'

A24 Films appeared out of nowhere this year and has become the film distribution company to watch out for. Within this year alone, A24 has release such films as The Bling Ring, Spring Breakers, Ginger & Rosa, and the upcoming The Spectacular Now. The company has recently announced the acquisition of David Michôd’s latest film The Rover, starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. Check out the full details after the jump.

Nothing has been seen of The Rover aside from the movie still above featuring Pattinson and Pearce. The film is described as a slow-burn thriller set in the Australian desert in the near future. Mad Max anyone? The Rover was written by Michôd himself and is based on a story conceived by Michôd and Joel Edgerton. Alongside Pattinson and Pearce stars Scoot McNairy, David Field, Anthony Hayes, Gillian Jones and Susan Prior.

Here is the official plot synopsis courtesy of A24:

Set in a world ten years following the collapse of the western economic system, where Australia’s mineral resources have drawn the desperados and dangerous to its shores. With society in decline, the rule of law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric (Pearce), who travels the desolate towns and roads of the Australian outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car they leave behind the wounded Rey (Pattinson) in their wake. Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that matters to him.

What could possibly be so special about this car that sets Pearce on a manhunt to find it? I can’t say I’ve seen Cosmpopolis, but I believe Robert Pattinson is on the correct path to shed his sparkly vampire skin. But can you imagine Pattinson with an Australian accent?

After the acquisition by A24 for U.S. theatrical distribution, producers Liz Watts and David Linde said:

“A24 is a perfect fit for The Rover – a young, innovative and exciting company at the cutting edge of the independent sector in the US, they have contributed to an already exciting array of global distribution partners, and we are pleased to be partnering with them on the future release of the film.”

The Rover was shot this past spring on location in the deserts of South Australia, and is currently in post-production. No set release date has been confirmed.
