With Disney’s Frozen coming out later this winter, animation fans are already buzzing about the studio’s next feature film. A Marvel/Disney hybrid, Big Hero 6 is the first collaborative adaptation between the two houses. Directed by Don Hall (2011’s Winnie the Pooh), the movie follows the story of a 14-year-old boy genius named Hiro who lives in the futuristic city of San Fransokyo. D23 Expo attendees caught their first glimpse of the new characters that will live in this world, and you can learn more about them after the break.
It was reveled, alongside Hiro, the rest of the superhero group will be comprised of Go Go – a bike messenger; Wasabi No Ginger – a sushi chef; Honey Lemon – a chemist and barista; and Fred – a comic book fanboy. This is a loose adaptation of the comic book of the same name, to which Hall stated that he wanted to approach his next film as a combination of his two passions: Disney and comic books.
Hall recalls his research and discovery of Big Hero 6 as an obscure title that would allow him to tell an origin story with the heartfelt attitude of Disney, which is the emotional story of a boy who loses his brother. Enter Baymax: the sixth component to the team; a soft, inflatable medical robot built by Hiro’s brother. Together they learn from each other while discovering who stole Hiro’s latest invention.
A sizzle reel was shown introducing the Big Hero 6 team, giving us a first-look at how the group will be outfitted with their own tech armor designed by Hiro. He’s kind of like the new Tony Stark, but without the alcohol addiction. Each suit represents each character’s natural talents because these are non-powered people. The footage was really colorful and visually exciting to watch. It’s got an Avengers vibe with that Disney sheen. I’m optimistic to see what Marvel and Disney Animation can make together.
Directed by Don Hall, Big Hero 6 is set for release on November 7, 2014.
