20th Century Fox has debuted the very first trailer for the highly anticipated film The Maze Runner. Based on the best-selling, young adult novel by James Dashner, The Maze Runner stars Dylan O’Brien as Thomas as well as Kaya Scodelario (Skins; Clash of the Titans) and Will Poulter (Meet the Millers). Watch the first, official trailer for The Maze Runner after the break.
Making his directorial debut, Wes Ball has been known as a graphics artist for many DVD and behind the scenes extras for Star Trek, Funny People, and Aliens in the Attic. He has made two short films entitled A Work in Progress and Jacob: The Movie. As far as I can tell, this first-time director has done an incredible job for property with such a huge scope.
I have personally never read The Maze Runner, but it presents a highly interesting concept. I am all for a dystopian future, but we have had quite our fill of YA novel adaptations pushing this genre such as Divergent, The Host, and The Hunger Games. And there have also been a slew of poorly performing YA adaptations such as Vampire Academy, The Immortal Instruments, and Beautiful Creatures. I like what I see here, and I hope that The Maze Runner can stand out and succeed where others have failed.
The most recognizable name to most people is the lead, Dylan O’Brien. He has quite the following on MTV’s Teen Wolf, and I thought he has done a decent job in The First Time and last year’s The Internship. What The Maze Runner lacks in star power it makes up for in sheer creative concept. From what we see in the trailer, the visuals look decent, the mystery intriguing enough, and the group of Lord of the Flies-esque survivors appear grounded enough to endure for two hours.

Here is the official plot synopsis for The Maze Runner:
When Thomas wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape.
Starring alongside O’Brien and the gang are Ki Hong Lee (Motherlover), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Phineas and Ferb; Game of Thrones), Aml Ameen (The Butler), Jacob Latimore (Black Nativity; Ride Along), and Patricia Clarkson (The Green Mile; Shutter Island).
Does this trailer have you you excited to venture into a new YA dystopia?
The Maze Runner arrives in theaters September 19, 2014.
