Our childhood friends Cory and Topanga are back on the small screen once again in their new show, Girl Meets World, the sequel sitcom to the classic Boy Meets World. A 30-second teaser aired today on the Disney Channel in the form of a clip that featured everyone’s favorite 90’s power couple all grown up and dealing with their young daughter Riley. Check out the video after the break.
Almost 20 years ago, the Disney Channel had the great idea to follow a young boy by the name of Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) and his relationships with friends and family while growing up. Flash forward to the present, Cory is now married to his childhood sweetheart Topanga (Danielle Fisher) and they have two children together. Girl Meets World follows the story of 12-year-old Riley, played by Rowan Blanchard (The Backup Plan), as she faces life lessons, many taught by her exceptional parents.
While this first trailer is short, it gives us a glimpse of Riley and her BFF Maya (Sabrina Carpenter) who are attempting to sneak out of the house a la Cory and Shawn style; the bedroom window. Right there to catch them in their escape is Cory, with Topanga at the doorway to back him up to cover both exits. Although short, the show’s message hits you right on the head when Riley asks, “How long do I have to live in my father’s world?,” with Cory responding, “Until you make it yours.”
Boy Meets World was a huge part of my childhood, growing up with the characters as they did. The best part of the show was how relatable each of the characters were and all the experiences they were going through. Hopefully Disney is able to pull the same magic again for a new generation. I am sure many fans of the original will tune in for the premiere, but will the show be able to keep their attention having already lived through it once? Boy Meets World fans are now in their 20’s-30’s.
Expect to see plenty of friendly faces being featured on the show. Already anticipated are Will Friedle (Eric Matthews), Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter), Lee Norris (Minkus, everyone’s favorite geek), and of course William Daniels (Mr. George Feeny).
Will you be reliving your childhood memories?
Girl Meets World is expected to premiere this summer on the Disney Channel for a full 21-episode season.
