Movies on Blu-Ray

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Marc Webb) Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of supervillains against him, impacting on his life. Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Chris Cooper, Sally Field, and Paul Giamatti

As much as The Amazing Spider-Man was unnecessary, TASM2 was just as unnecessary and scatter brained. Stone and Garfield still do well together, but the villains and the overall narrative is just a mess – read my full review. Visually the movie is beautiful, which could make for a good watch at home. Watch it on mute! The special features includes:

  • Audio Commentary with filmmakers
  • Four All-New Deleted Scenes with Commentary by Marc Webb
  • Alicia Keys “It’s On Again” music video
  • Nine Additional Deleted Scenes with Commentary by Marc Webb (Blu-ray exclusive)
  • “The Wages of Heroism: Making The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” featuring revealing, in-depth segments including (Blu-ray exclusive):
    • “Heart of the City: Shooting in New York”
    • “Triple Threat: Attack of the Villains”
    • “A More Dangerous World: Transforming Electro and the Green Goblin”
    • “A Bolt From the Blue: Visual Effects” “Lessons Learned: Development and Direction”
  • “Spidey Gets His Groove Back: Music and Editing”

The Quiet Ones (John Pogue) A university professor and a team of students conduct an experiment on a young woman, uncovering terrifyingly dark, unexpected forces in the process. Starring Jared Harris, Sam Claflin, Olivia Cooke, and Erin Richards

The characters and the acting is pretty sub-par, but the story is somewhat interesting. Sadly the film is mostly a bore. The Quiet Ones is a short watch, but it feels like a total drag. And can we please stop flushing out colors in horror movies that are suppose to be in the past. Special features included are:

  • Audio commentary with director/co-writer John Pogue and producer Tobin Armbrust
  • “Welcome to the Experiment: Making The Quiet Ones” documentary
  • “An Ominous Opening” featurette
  • Deleted scenes
  • Outtakes

The Sacrament (Ti West) A newsteam trails a man as he travels to an undisclosed location to find his missing sister. Upon entering “Eden Parish” and meeting the community’s leader, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. Starring Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Kentucker Audley, and Amy Seimetz

Love me some Ti West. He continues to master the slow burn as The Sacrament takes its time and builds some of the most unnerving tension ever. I really didn’t know what to expect going in, and my patience was rewarded. Special features included are:

  • The Making of The Sacrament
  • AXS TV: A Look at The Sacrament
  • Theatrical Trailer

Y Tu Mamá También: Criterion Collection (Alfonso Cuaron) In Mexico, two teenage boys and an attractive older woman embark on a road trip and learn a thing or two about life, friendship, sex, and each other. Starring Maribel Verdú, Gael García Bernal, and Daniel Giménez Cacho

I actually watched this movie for the first time this year, and it is such a brilliant film. Alfonso Cuaron has been a master of his craft from the very beginning of his career. This Criterion Collection edition will surely have film fanatics falling in love with this picture one again. Special features included are:

  • New 2K digital restoration, supervised by director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki and approved by director Alfonso Cuarón, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • On “Y tu mamá también”: Then and On “Y tu mamá también”: Now
  • New interview with philosopher Slavoj Žižek about the film
  • On-set documentary from 2001
  • Deleted scenes
  • You Owe Me One (2002), a short film by Carlos Cuarón
  • Trailers
  • New English subtitle translation
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Charles Taylor and character biographies by Carlos Cuarón

Toy Story of Terror! (Angus MacLane) The toys go on a road trip, when an unexpected event leads them to a roadside motel, after one of the toys goes missing, the others find themselves caught up in a mysterious, monstrous, and terrifying sequence of events that must be solved before they all suffer the same fate Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack

I missed this feature on ABC when it debuted on TV, and the rest of the Toy Story shorts are great, so I’m sure this is another successful edition to the series. Special features included are:

  • Traveling at Night with Jim Jarmusch — A portrait of Director Jim Jarmusch at work on the set of his latest film, Only Lovers Left Alive
  • Deleted & Extended Scenes
  • Yasmine Hamdan “Hal” Music Video – An extended version of Yasmine Hamdan performing “Hal.”

Only Lovers Left Alive (Jim Jarmusch) A depressed musician reunites with his lover, though their romance – which has already endured several centuries – is disrupted by the arrival of uncontrollable younger sister. Starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, and Mia Wasikowska

Missed this one in theaters, but have heard good things. Special features includes:

  • Traveling at Night with Jim Jarmusch — A portrait of Director Jim Jarmusch at work on the set of his latest film, Only Lovers Left Alive
  • Deleted & Extended Scenes
  • Yasmine Hamdan “Hal” Music Video – An extended version of Yasmine Hamdan performing “Hal.”
