Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for September 18, 2014. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Silver Linings Playbook, Beginners, New Girl, 3 Days to Kill, One Day, and more, which you’ll find after the break.
Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell) After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own. Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, John Ortiz, and Paul Herman
If you were one of the handful that missed this Oscar darling, then you are in for a treat. Jennifer Lawrence didn’t win her Oscar because she’s just J-Law. And then there’s Bradley Cooper, who blows his career out of the water. Then there is De Niro who completely revitalizes himself. Silver Linings Playbook has it all. This movie is fantastic. The Sacrament (Ti West) A newsteam trails a man as he travels to an undisclosed location to find his missing sister. Upon entering “Eden Parish” and meeting the community’s leader, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. Starring Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Kentucker Audley, and Amy Seimetz
Love me some Ti West (House of the Devil; V/H/S; The Innkeepers – all three you can also find on Netflix Instant). He continues to master the slow burn as The Sacrament takes its time and builds some of the most unnerving tension ever. I really didn’t know what to expect going in, and my patience was rewarded. This is the perfect way to ease into October! (Watch it now)
3 Days to Kill (McG) A dying Secret Service Agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment. Starring Kevin Costner, Hailee Steinfeld, Connie Nielsen, and Amber Heard
You probably missed this under the radar spy thriller like most people earlier this year. And that’s OK. It’s nothing special, but it’s a good watch for a rainy day. Come for the action. Stay for the Amber Heard. (Watch it now)
Beginners (Mike Mills) A young man is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father: that he has terminal cancer, and that he has a young male lover. Starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, and Mélanie Laurent
A very sweet, charming, and playful movie about life and love. Christopher Plummer does an excellent job here, and it’s no surprise he won the Oscar. There is also a brilliant dog actor in this movie too. (Watch it now)
New Girl (Elizabeth Meriwether) – Season 3 – After a bad break-up, Jess, an offbeat young woman, moves into an apartment loft with three single men. Although they find her behavior very unusual, the men support her – most of the time. Starring Jake Johnson, Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, and Damon Wayans Jr.
Catch up before season 4 begins! (Watch it now)
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (Leonard Nimoy) To save Earth from an alien probe, Admiral Kirk and his fugitive crew go back in time to 20th century Earth to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it, humpback whales. Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, and Catherine Hicks
WHALES! (Watch it now)
One Day (Lone Scherfig) After spending the night together on the night of their college graduation Dexter and Em are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives. They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day. Starring Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, and Patricia Clarkson
This is only on the list to tell you that you SHOULD NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. It’s a complete bore, a drag, uninteresting, and meandering.
Here are more titles that also recently have become available on Netflix Watch Instant:
