Actor Ezra Miller, perhaps best known for his role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the thriller We Need to Talk About Kevin, has been cast as the title role in Warner Bros. upcoming The Flash, due out in 2018. The news broke today at a Warner Bros. event where The Flash and many other DC superhero films were announced. More after the jump.
Miller is a peculiar casting choice for the Scarlett Speedster as he is generally known for his smaller roles, less action-oriented roles. So it will be interesting to see him in a leading role. From his work, Miller has performed exemplary and is a welcome choice alongside Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg.
In addition to the announcement of The Flash at the investors meeting today, Warner Bros. also revealed that Suicide Squad will be made into a film. It will be intriguing to see which version of the Suicide Squad Warner Bros. will be going with as a new iteration has been released in recent years with several new members.
Suicide Squad will be following Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice due out in 2016, prior to The Flash. Other films that were announced by Warner Bros. included Shazam and a Justice League sequel in 2019, followed by a reboot of the 2011 Green Lantern movie and a Cyborg film.
And while the CW has just released The Flash TV show, as far as we know, it will be far removed and unrelated from the upcoming film (although this should be readily clear from the casting choice.) It also begs the question of which Flash storyline will we be seeing? Will it be the well-known Wally West or Barry Allen?
There may also be some marketing concerns with the movie being released as late as 2018 when the show has just made its debut on network television in 2014. Will audiences still care about the lightning fast superhero four years from now or will the hype have died down?
The Flash is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2018.
