Phil Lord and Chris Miller Penning ‘LEGO Movie’ Sequel

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Penning 'LEGO Movie' Sequel

It should come as no surprise that The LEGO Movie has earned itself a sequel. Garnering $468 million at the worldwide box office, it is one of the highest grossing movies of the year. And we have now learned that the writer directors of the first film, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, will be returning to write the sequel. After the jump, learn more about The LEGO Movie 2 as well as the LEGO movie spin-offs Warner Bros. plans releasing.

Chris Miller and Phil Lord are no strangers to writing sequels to their own work. The comedic duo have written the sequels Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and 22 Jump Street. And as much as we love their work, it has not been confirmed whether or not they will return to direct The LEGO Movie 2. Lord and Miller have a lot on their plate, slated to executive produce a television program entitled, Last Man on Earth for the FOX, which will premiere in 2015. Hopefully, the tag team will be able to recreate the success that they had with the first LEGO movie.

And due to the huge success from The LEGO Movie, Warner Bros. has setup the release of two spin-offs, Ninjago and LEGO Batman. Presumably, Ninjago will follow the plot of the Nickelodeon series of the same name and LEGO Batman is most likely based on the fan favorite and runaway star of The LEGO Movie. The blocky caped crusader voiced by Will Arnett has gained so much popularity that the spin-off will take The LEGO Movie 2‘s original release date in 2017, moving pushing back the sequel to 2018.

More LEGO movies on the horizon sound like a great idea, but will they work if Phil Lord and Chris Miller aren’t behind them? Until we know who will write and direct these spin-offs, it will be anyone’s guess as to whether these will be as big of a hit as The LEGO Movie.

The LEGO Movie 2 is set to be released some time in 2018.
