Netflix Streaming Report Force Majeure, Saw, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for March 19, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Force Majeure, Saw, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and more, which you can find after the jump.

Force Majeure (Ruben Östlund) Rated R [120 min] – A family on a ski holiday in the French Alps find themselves staring down an avalanche during lunch one day; in the aftermath, their dynamic has been shaken to its core, with a question mark hanging over their patriarch in particular. Starring Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, and Clara Wettergren

Slowest of the slow burns, Force Majeure is definitely a movie you need to come in with a good sense of humor. It has that European sensibility you expect, but darker and kind of uncomfortable, in a hilarious way. What fascinates me the most about this film is the conversations it builds and the scenarios that it creates in your own mind as to what you would do in their situation.

3rd Rock from the Sun (Seasons 1-6) (Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner) Unrated [22 min] – A group of aliens are sent to Earth, disguised as a human family, to experience and report life on the 3rd planet from the sun. Starring John Lithgow, Jane Curtin, Kristen Johnston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jane Curtin, Simbi Khali, Elmarie Wendel, and Wayne Knight

A classic TV sitcom that perfectly encapsulates the ’90s. I haven’t seen this show in a very long time, but from what I can remember of it there is a lot of fantastic fish out of water humor. The most wonderful thing about 3rd Rock from the Sun is the cast, it’s simply too perfect for words.

Saw (2004) (James Wan) [Re-release] Rated R [103 min] – With a dead body lying between them, two men wake up in the secure lair of a serial killer who’s been nicknamed “Jigsaw”. The men must follow various rules and objectives if they wish to survive and win the deadly game set for them. Starring Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Danny Glover, Ken Leung, and Tobin Bell

The franchise that practically created the torture porn genre. Saw is the kind of horror movie that comes along only once every so often that totally grabs you by the cojones and doesn’t let go. You’re caught up in it all, and it’s unlike something you’ve never seen before. Unfortunately, sequels and imitators came out in droves over the next few years. Luckily, it launched James Wan’s career, which we can be very happy about. Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV are also now available on Netflix as of this week, the fourth being my favorite.

You’re Not You (George C. Wolfe) Rated R [102 min] – A drama centered on a classical pianist who has been diagnosed with ALS and the brash college student who becomes her caregiver. Starring Josh Duhamel, Ali Larter, Hilary Swank, and Emmy Rossum

Seeing You’re Not You last fall during the San Diego Film Festival, I was truly intrigued by the concept of the story after how big the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge had become. Hilary Swank puts on one helluva performance, and her relationship with Emmy Rossum is such a true and raw connection. The movie brings up conversations which you would come to expect from a film based on a medical condition this severe, but at least it does so in a very honest nature. Josh Duhamel kind of gets lost in the mix of everything and Rossum’s character doesn’t have that much of a fulfilling arc, however the movie is a touching and poignant approach to ALS.
