While rumors continue to churn surrounding who will fill the red and blue tights as the next Spider-Man, a familiar face will be returning in one of the most iconic comic book movie franchise roles of all time. That’s right, if the headline didn’t grab your attention, J.K. Simmons has been approached to reprise his role as Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson. Learn more about this exciting news after the break.
It was almost two months ago when Marvel Studios made their big announcement of their plans to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speculations as to who would play the next Peter Park has been tossed around from my frontrunner Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner; The Interview) to Logan Lerman (Fury; The Perks of Being a Wallflower).
But with all that being said, it is J.K. Simmons who has revealed himself to be the first star in the Spider-Man reboot. While on tour promoting his latest film, Terminator: Genisys, Simmons let slip in a recent interview with Esquire this breaking news while asked about his voice acting work:
“I’ve done voice work before [Sam Raimi’s] Spider-Man, and it wasn’t until that film where I really saw the opportunity to have fun with such a charismatic character. I’ve continued to voice J. Jonah Jameson in various animated series since, and was very excited when Sony approached me about reprising the role for the next live-action movie.”
It is not known at this point at what capacity J. Jonah Jameson will have an influence in the upcoming Spider-Man film. Whether he will play Peter Parker’s boss at the Daily Bugle or if he will just have a small cameo is still up in the air, as we still don’t know what age they will make Spider-Man. Regardless, we are very happy to know he’ll be returning to the cinematic Spider-verse.
Sony’s newest Spider-Man is set to release in theaters on July 28, 2017, but you can catch the web-head on the silverscreen sooner when he debuts alongside Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War on May 16, 2016.
