Box Office Battlefield: Funny People, The Collector, and The Cove

battle field

Well howdy there, here are the movies that are coming out this weekend that you should or probably shouldn’t see for the weekend of July 31, 2009…………

Funny People (Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann) This is a must see. With so much gold around Judd Apatow’s belt, I don’t see how you could miss this movie. It looks heartwarming and hilarious, which is killer combination for all to see. This is more of an adult coming of age movie unlike the past films Apatow has created (40-Year Old Virgin & Knocked Up). It is about an actor, George Simmons (Sandler), who befriends an up and coming comedian, Ira (Rogen), as he goes through the notion that he is dying. But the doctors tell him that he gets a second chance and things start to look better for George. This film has a lot of influence from Apatow’s life and with a star studded cast and a great story, you need to go out and see this movie.

Aliens in the Attic (Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman, Carter Jenkins) This is a movie you could take your kids too, but it would be kind of painful to watch. Alien’s are in the attic and want to take over the house, but will Ashley Tisdale sing them to death? Will the grandmother bust out more Street Fighter moves? It’s original I’ll say, but it’s nothing I would run to the theater too. Skip it.

Adam (Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher) This little Fox Searchlight indy dramedy/romance film looks interesting. It’s about a guy named Adam with Asperger’s Syndrome who is drawn to the girl who lives downstairs from his apartment. It looks clever, funny and touching, but nothing special. If you like the kind of films that Fox Searchlight has produced like Juno, (500) Days of Summer, The Wrestler, this is a nice quaint movie you might want to check out on a lazy Sunday. I’d say rent it.

The Cove (Richard O’Barry) This is a clever documentary of activists exploring the rumored incidents of dolphin abuse near Taijii, Japan. This exposé of infiltrating to find the truth is an award winning film from many film festivals such as Sundance. This is a must see, as this is a compelling story, and if you can stomach sitting through a  documentary. You should see it or rent it when it comes out.

The Collector (Josh Stewart, Andrea Roth, Juan Fernández) You say this just looks like another slasher film, well it is, but it is cleverly different. From the creators of Saw IV, V, and VI, bring you a shocking new figure to horror. A man breaks into a house, but someone worse is already inside. Now the man who broke in must save the ones he was trying to steal from. From a fan of horror, I think this looks good compared to what has come out recently. The tag line says “He Always Takes One,” but what does he collect? I guess you’ll have to see it to find out.

I Wanna Play A Different Game?

the collector

I present to you a really messed up looking movie called The Collector from the writers of Saw 4, 5 and 6. The red band trailer was released by IGN.com today and looks like it could be promising. It is about an ex-con pays a visit to his new employers home unaware that someone else has paid a visit before him. The house is set up with traps and the theif must try to survive while possibly saving the family. This little horror flick comes out july 31st. You can check out the trailer below and I’ll be sure to check it out when it comes to theaters.
