Villains Officially Announced for The Dark Knight Rises!

Big news created shockwaves in the geek-o-sphere today when Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises villains were officially announced. Little Anne Hathaway is filling the big shoes of Selina Kyle who is better known as Catwoman. This completes 1/2 of the rumor that consisted of a two female lead film. The other villain was announced as well, with the revealing of Tom Hardy’s character, Bane, who was seen in that horrible Joel Schumacher film, Batman & Robin. To read the entire press release keep reading after the jump!

Now that we know our villains, who’s excited? I know I think Catwoman is a great choice. I’m not too set on Bane. From what I know, Bane was brought in to physically break Batman’s back. We’ll see how far they go with that storyline. I’m a little afraid of Hathaway’s personality with Nolan’s direction and style. Don’t get me wrong, she is an amazing actress, but she has a really bubbly sense about her that I just don’t see in Catwoman. I’m sure Nolan saw something in her to be able to cast her, so I wish her the best of luck! But remember when we were like “Why Heath Ledger?” His performance shut us really quick.

Since we no longer have Rachel Dawes as a a love interest, Selina Kyle might fit that into her agenda.  I think Catwoman will really test Bruce Wayne’s emotional strength as the Dark Knight and become a great bookend to Nolan’s trilogy. Will we see a love triangle with the other female lead? I hope not, but I can trust Nolan’ s judgement thus far.

I was really hoping for Clayface as a wishful thinking, but that might look weird in Nolan’s grounded Batman reality. I was also thinking, many critics and bloggers have nailed Chris Nolan on his use of actresses in his films. Perhaps creating this stronger female role in Selina Kyle will shut everyone up.

The Dark Knight Rises is set to release in theaters July 20, 2012.

(Updated Rebuttal) Earlier I assumed that Hathaway could play Catwoman, but the press release never stated that fact, only Selina Kyle. So what does that mean? Is that a tease to us fans? Will she play Catwoman? Or will we just get Selina Kyle? Mr. Nolan you are so tricky.
