Matthew Broderick Channels Ferris Bueller for Super Bowl Commercial

Matthew Broderick Honda Ferris Bueller

It’s not every day you see actors reprising their roles of past characters from their movies. When Honda was pitching ideas to promote their new CRV model, some how Ferris Bueller’s Day Offcame to mind. I’m not exactly sure how the two relate, but film director Todd Phillips was able to pull it off. But not everyone was pleased, many fans of the classic 80s film are very upset.

Many people on the Internets are up in arms about the whole commercial. I can understand where they’re coming from, Ferris was a very anti-establishment character who went against the norm and fought “the man.” So why would Ferris Bueller be pimping out a Honda CRV? Simple, this isn’t Ferris Bueller, it’s Matthew Broderick. Some folks just need to calm down.

And we can’t blame Honda. They are working on nostalgia alone to draw in viewers and to spark conversation. And boy is it working – thus me talking about it. If it wasn’t a successful commercial, nobody would care. Watch the ad below:

The ad was directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover; Old School). It hits every note of the classic John Hughes film. I only wish we could have seen Alan Ruck (Cameron) or other cameos from the cast.

For some odd reason, it has become tradition to release your Super Bowl ad before the actual Super Bowl? And all I have to say is, “what’s up with that?” What happened to the element of surprise? What happened to the enjoyment of sitting down and watching the Super Bowl strictly for the commercials?

If ad agencies are spending exorbitant amounts of cash in the sum of over $3 million dollars, what good does that do them to release it early? Instead of hearing laughs during the Super Bowl, all we’ll hear now is, “oh I saw that one on the Internet last week.” That’s no fun.

See Honda’s Ferris Bueller commercial live during Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, February 5.
