As if we needed a reason to create another reboot. It was announced almost two years ago that there was going to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot in the works. According to new reports, it appears as though the production is moving forward and they have found its director.
Reboots can work from time to time. Look at The Incredible Hulkor Christopher Nolan’s Batmansaga. But when I heard that Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes, was taking over, chills were sent down my spine.
Surprisingly they have done an OK job with some of the horror properties they have tackled, (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre; The Amityville Horror; Friday the 13th), but having them take on the TMNTfranchise just doesn’t feel right.
There hasn’t been much of anything revealed in terms of plot, production, or casting, but choosing Jonathan Liebesman as the director isn’t something you want to start off with. Movie goers may recognize his work in last year’s abomination Battle: Los Angeles. If they want to generate revenue and rekindle the flame of the franchise to spark interesting within the modern times, I don’t think a director with his track record would be the optimal choice.
There is absolutely nothing disclosed about this news other than the fact that Liebesman is in negotiations to join the production – so he may not even get it. I think if we were to have someone reboot the franchise it would have to be someone near and dear to creature affects with a great storytelling sensibility, like Guillermo del Toro and his Hellboy franchise. Now that’s the kind of energy, spirit, and direction I would want to see in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. The series is near and dear to my heart, and I don’t need some spastic, shaky-cam director ruining it for me.
There is no scheduled release date for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.
