The weekend warriors for April 5, 2013 includes Evil Dead and Jurassic Park 3D. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of all the movie releases for the weekend. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard earned dollars. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.
Last weekend, G.I. Joe: Retaliation took the box office by force and left The Croods out in the cold. This weekend is a horror geeks wet dream as Sam Raimi’s classic, The Evil Dead, is retold/remade/reimgined/sequalized with a fresh new cast that is put through hell itself. But another oldy, but good also returns this weekend in 3D.
Can the deadites stop John Hammond from sparing no expense with a post 3D conversion? Klaatu verata nikto! Hold on to your butts! This is the Box Office Battlefield:
Evil Dead (Rated R) 91 min – (Directed by Fede Alvarez) Starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Elizabeth Blackmore
Synopsis: Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival.
Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 65% • Audience – 85%
I’m genuinely shocked at how high the audience score is on Rotten Tomatoes. I am not the biggest fan of the original series, but I love my horror and was interested in seeing what Fede Alvarez could bring to the franchise and the genre. He sticks to its roots pretty well – most of the film is done without CGI – but he fails to make it his own. It’s a pretty gruesome movie, something many Americans aren’t use to seeing compared to some hardcore French horror or other Asian horror filmmakers. There isn’t much depth, but if you’re looking for a good excuse to test your stomach, Evil Dead is one to seek out. MATINEE IT!
Jurassic Park [3D re-release] (Rated PG-13) 127 min – Director: Steven Spielberg Stars: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough
Synopsis: During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.
Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 90% • Audience – 83%
A true classic, Jurassic Park will forever be one of the greatest movie going experiences of all time. From the moment you see the first dinosaurs in the herd, your face is just blown clean off with awe and wonder. The post-conversion 3D is very well done, it is bright, and there is a great amount of depth in certain sequences. But as many post-converted 3D movies go, the filmmaker had no intent in creating the movie in 3D, so there are few moments that stand out in 3D. It is still an amazing experience to behold, especially if you have kids who have never seen it. Try and find an IMAX that is playing it if you can shell out the bones. The sound is heavily improved, the story is still ripe with adventure, and the animatronics are just as frightening as they were in 1993. MATINEE IT!
Because Evil Dead is rated R and G.I. Joe and The Croods were at a dead heat coming into this weekend, I think Jurassic Park 3D may come out on top victorious this weekend. JP3D has only about 300 theaters shy of what Evil Dead is being shown in. With 3D and 3D IMAX ticket sales and how classic the movie is, there’s not reason why it can’t win this weekend.
WINNER: Jurassic Park 3D
