Where we last left Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his new dwarf pals, they had just escaped from the clutches of some nasty goblins and narrowly escaped an encounter with the white orc Azog. Warner Bros. has now released the teaser trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second of Peter Jackson’s expanded Hobbit trilogy. Many fans have remained patient, longing for the day to see the fearsome Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) on the big screen. And now they have their chance. Find the trailer and your first look at the dragon underneath the mountain after the break.
Whether you were an enthusiast of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey or not, Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth continues at the end of this year. What was a nice introduction that had many lukewarm to the idea of a three-part story based on a the 310 page book written by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Desolation of Smaug should test the temperature of where fans stand on the series. This teaser trailer looks like TDOS brings far more action that could be the energy and excitement the first film lacked.
Included among the action of this sequel lies the introduction of many new characters such as Thranduil of Mirkwood (Lee Pace), Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), and Bard (Luke Evans; who surprisingly looks a lot like Bloom from the Pirates trilogy). And of course, Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) make appearances throughout along with the 11 other dwarves.
As we move forward in Bilbo’s tale toward the Lonely Mountain, and taking into consideration that this is the second of three films, it’s interesting to ponder where Jackson will cap off Desolation Smaug and begin There and Back Again, the final film of the trilogy. From the looks of this trailer we will meet the spiders of Mirkwood, watch the excursion party escape from elves down a river in barrels, reach Lake Town, and enter the Lonely Mountain. Will we actually see Smaug take action against his unwanted guests and Lake Town or will Jackson stop short?
Here’s the official plot synopsis of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, courtesy of IMDb.com:
The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.
How do you feel The Desolation of Smaug shapes up compared to An Unexpected Journey? What are you looking forward to that Peter Jackson could have improved on?
