Moving away from the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise, writer-directors Chris Miller and Phill Lord (21 Jump Street) have moved on to build something more ambitious. Part live-action, part animation, The LEGO Movie comes to audiences completely original. Founded in 1932, everyone’s favorite childhood building blocks will be coming to theaters February 7, 2014. Watch the first teaser trailer after the break.

Been in the works with Warner Bros. since 2008, it’s great to see The LEGO Movie finally taking flight. There are so many different varieties of LEGOs these days that it’s unfathomable how much research and development went into making this film. The possibilities of what they can do in this world are endless. Of course many famous characters such as Batman and Superman make an appearance because they are under the acquisition of the WB, but what big brand wouldn’t want a piece of this action?

Emmy Award winning Chris McKay (Robot Chicken) has also joined Lord and Miller to co-direct the film to add his live-action flair, which is to their benefit. The trailer below is very fun, colorful, and full of action. Not much detail is given regarding the plot, but the visuals alone will keep interest high until the a full trailer makes its debut.

There isn’t as much wit as you’d expect from Lord and Miller, but I suspect that they’re holding back so as not to give all of the goods away at once. It’s a good teaser trailer and sets expectations high, but as an original animated feature, you’d think they would give audiences a little more on the main character at least. I think the marketing team is relying a little heavily on the LEGO brand and not so much on the story, which could hurt the buzz going in if they don’t convey a more interesting story later on in the campaign.

This original 3D computer-animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

There is a very fun and talented voice cast in the form of Morgan Freeman, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Jonah Hill, Charlie Day, with more yet to be announced, and I’m excited to see more details come out once they are made available.

The LEGO Movie will assemble in US theaters on February 7, 2014.
