Box Office Battlefield: ‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’

Box Office Battlefield 'Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones'

The weekend warriors starting January 3, 2014 includes Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Box Office Battlefield is a recurring rundown of all the movie releases for the weekend. Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard-earned dollars. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others.

Last weekend, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug struck again for the third weekend in a row. As the first movie of the year, Blumhouse and Paramount are looking to make a mark on 2014 with the next installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Willy Toby dominate the contenders this weekend or will Bilbo and company overthrow the competition again? Bloody Mary! This is the Box Office Battlefield:

Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones Title Movie Logo

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (Rated R) 84 min – (Directed by Christopher Landon) Starring Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Gloria Sandoval, Molly Ephraim, and Richard Cabral

Synopsis: After being “marked,” Jesse begins to be pursued by mysterious forces while his family and friends try to save him. (Watch the trailer)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 51% • Audience – 67%

Not the best entry into the Paranormal Activity franchise, but it definitely makes up for the sad disappointment that was Paranormal Activity 4. With better characters, a funny script, and a decently interwoven plot connecting to the previous installments, The Marked Ones is the defibrillator the franchise needed to bring audiences back into the theaters. Despite cheap scares, the screenplay does the franchise justice to lead the story into the right direction, but it isn’t quite out of the doghouse yet. MATINEE IT WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS! Paranormal Activity, despite it’s horrendous fourth entry, still has great brand recognition. Audiences are always looking for new scares and the trailers suggest this won’t be any ordinary haunted house horror. Since this is the only wide release of the weekend, along with the franchise name, The Marked Ones should be able to claim the top spot. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend shall be:

Winner: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
