In an official announcement made by Marvel Studios today, it has been confirmed that Michael Douglas (Wall Street; Basic Instinct; Traffic) will play the role of Hank Pym in Edgar Wright’s new film Ant-Man. First appearing in “Tales to Astonish” #27 in January 1962, Pym was the first to don the Ant-Man suit, as well as one of the founding members of The Avengers. Douglas will star alongside Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man; Role Models) who will play Scott Lang, another character in the Marvel Universe who has appeared as Ant-Man. Read the official statement by Marvel Studios Present Kevin Feige after the break.
It was only a week ago when Wright teased a frame of an episode of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, “To Steal an Ant-Man.” At that time we had no official word as to who Rudd would be playing, but fans speculated he would be Scott Lang, as the character steals Pym’s Ant-Man suit in order to make ends meet for himself. The only issue here is that Douglas will be hitting 70 this year and in the comics Pym is easily half that age.
Cinema Blend believes that there is another actor Marvel has yet to confirm to play Ant-Man as well. In a past interview, Wright says he’d like his story to include a prologue with a younger Pym as Ant-Man in the 60’s with the story flashing forward to Lang. With that said, would Pym’s love interest and partner Janet van Dyne aka The Wasp be actualized with the younger Pym, with Lang, or not even depicted in the movie? The Wasp is also a founding member of The Avengers.
On the subject of the casting, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige states:
“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”
I’m also curious to know how they will integrate Pym into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Pym is the inventor of Ultron, will he be working on him in the past with Howard Stark, Tony Stark’s father? Since Ant-Man will take place after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and neither Pym nor Lang will appear in the film, how will this affect the story?
All I know is I want 2015 now.
How do you feel about Michael Douglas as Ant-Man? Do you think Wright and Marvel Studios is taking the right direction for the character?
