This week, Marvel Studios introduced the first teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, and now we have the privilege to learn what the cast has to say about their respective characters. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel sit down to briefly chat about their roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and how they relate to them. Plus we get our first listen to what Rocket Raccoon will sound like! Check out the five short character introductions after the break.
First up we have the leader, Peter Quill aka Star Lord, portrayed by Christ Pratt. This is definitely a reach out of the actor’s comfort zone as Pratt has been mostly known for playing bumbling goof balls with a heart of gold. Slimmed down and bulked up as you can see in the teaser, Pratt appears to fit comfortably well as Quill and should be a great charismatic lead to bring new fans into the Marvel Cinematic Universe who haven’t joined already.
Next we have Gamora who is played by Zoe Saldana. Zoe is not unfamiliar with the intergalactic, sci-fi action adventure films as she has appeared in Avatar and Star Trek. Gamora will be a physically demanding role that I think the actress will be up to the challenge. Saldana always embodies her characters well and will be able to provide a convincing, emotional performance if the character calls for it, but from what we see here she is all muscle.
Dave Bautista is stepping out of the WWE ring and into the MCU as Drax the Destroyer. The hulking mass that is Bautista has been seen in such movies as The Man with the Iron Fists and most recently Riddick, and always presents a nice physical presence on screen. This will definitely be his break out role if Drax is given enough to do when the movie is not focused on Rocket, Gamora, or Star Lord.
Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) is what Marvel fans have been waiting patiently for. Here we see Cooper in the audio booth recording voice over for the role. As previously stated, this is the first time anyone has heard Cooper’s take on the furry gunslinger. Based on the one line we hear, I think it’s too early to tell if Cooper will be able to fit the bill. Traditionally, Rocket has a Cockney accent, and I didn’t really catch it, but it doesn’t mean he won’t.
And last but not least we have Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). Not unfamiliar to the voice acting world, Diesel has voiced one of the most iconic cartoon figures to have ever graced film, the Iron Giant. Although Groot can only can say his name, Diesel’s deep, gravely voice should be perfect in demanding your attention amongst the other Guardians.
Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy also stars John C. Reilly, Lee Pace, Benecio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, and Glenn Close.
Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters August 1, 2014.
