The Netflix Streaming Report: Short Term 12, The Family, The Bible, Peeples, and More

Short Term 12 Movie 2013

Welcome to The Streaming Report for April 17, 2014, a weekly feature that suggests newly uploaded movies to Netflix Watch Instant. After the long week on the grind you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix has been kind enough to supply us with Short Term 12, The Family, The Bible, Peeples, and more, which you’ll find after the break.

Short Term 12 (Destin Cretton) A 20-something supervising staff member of a residential treatment facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend. Starring Brie Larson, Frantz Turner, and John Gallagher Jr.

There were many amazing films last year, but nothing flew quite under the radar unfortunately as much as Short Term 12 did. Hailed as one of my favorite movies of 2013, Short Term 12 is a genuine work of art. It’s quite possibly one of the best directed films I have seen in a long time. It’s simply an emotionally compelling roller coaster of written dialogue and beautifully crafted characters. (Watch it now)

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Jon M. Chu) The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, and Adrianne Palicki

If you’re so compelled to watch an interestingly terrible movie than be my guest and partake in one of the most disappointing films of yesteryear. So much wasted potential here. (Watch it now)

The Family (Luc Besson) The Manzoni family, a notorious mafia clan, is relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program, where fitting in soon becomes challenging as their old habits die hard. Starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Dianna Agron

For all of its weird tonal imbalances, The Family is quite the wild card. At one moment it’s a quirky family comedy and then all of the sudden it becomes this dramatic mob piece. It’s not great, but there are plenty of worse things you could find on Netflix to waste your time. (Watch it now)

Leprechaun (Mark Jones) An evil, sadistic Leprechaun goes on a killing rampage in search of his beloved pot of gold. Starring Warwick Davis, Jennifer Aniston, and Ken Olandt

This movie started Jennifer Aniston’s career. Need I say more? (Watch it now)

The Bible Miniseries The History Channel

The Bible: The Epic Miniseries (Roma Downey and Mark Burnett) The story of God’s creation of the Earth and the landmark events leading up to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Starring Keith David, Robert Powell, and Diogo Morgado

If you missed the epic retelling of The History Channel’s Jesus story here’s your chance to catch up and not waste your time seeing Son of God. (Watch it now)

Tyler Perry’s Peeples (Tina Gordon Chism) Sparks fly when Wade Walker crashes the Peeples annual reunion in the Hamptons to ask for their precious daughter Grace’s hand in marriage. Starring Craig Robinson, Kerry Washington, and David Alan Grier

For only the second Tyler Perry movie I have ever witnessed, Peeples is surprisingly not as terrible as you would expect. It’s basically an African American version of Meet the Parents. There is actually a genuine moment of fun and family smack dab in the middle, but a lot of the terrible jokes ruin the film. (Watch it now)

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Seasons 1 & 2) Get a taste for the unexpected! Join the Emmy and Peabody Award winning Anthony Bourdain as he takes incredible adventures to extraordinary locations. Starring Anthony Bourdain

I’ve never seen this show, but Anthony Bourdain series are always fascinating. (Watch it now)

  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force (Season 2)
  • Ben 10 (Seasons 2 & 3)
  • Ben 10: Alien Force (Season 3)
  • Ben 10: Ultimate Alien (Season 2)
